Swap a '98 4.6 for a '92 351 Windsor?
You are going to need at a minimum.
-Intake manifold
-carb
-custom headers
-custom motor mounts
-all accesories
-fuel tank
-fuel pump
-modifying fuel lines
-trans (not many 4.2 4x4's out there that are auto, probably be looking for an e40d and the t case and custom driveshafts)
-custom power steering hoses
-custom a/c lines if you wish to have a/c
-a lot of wiring if you plan to use factory gauges.
-You plan on pulling the pcm? How is that gonna react with the GEM and other electrical things even like the radio, power windows, power locks if you have
-you electric shift on the fly 4x4 on manual, either way how are you going to get the front hubs to lock. They don't make a manual hub for these.
No has done this swap before because it is just retarded to be honest with you. I have no idea how mechanically inclined you and your dad are but if you start this project it will likely never get finished. If you are dead set on it then be my guest. It's YOUR truck, YOUR time and YOUR money. Do what YOU want with it.
You want to build a build a decent 4x4 for driving around
~1000 used pi 5.4L
~$500 Long tube headers
~$200 DIY electric fans
~$300-$500 for rest of the exhaust
~$500 sct tuning
~$300 for miscellaneous tune up parts, lower intake gaskets etc.
So for ~$2800 you can get yourself a decent starting point for your truck. After that you can start piecing together an L swap for ~2500-3000. Stock L pullies making 9 psi you would have over 400hp on tap. It will all bolt in, be reliable and look like factory.
I would like to thank you for your concern Gotts2BMe but I believe my original question was whether or not the 351 Windsor would bolt to my tranny. Thanks to several polite and kind folks I have received my answer. As for what it will take to COMPLETE this project, emphasis on complete, my father and I are well aware of the required changes and modifications to certain components. Also, to answer your question of how mechanically inclined my farther and I are, we are highly inclined in that area. My father graduated Nashville Auto Diesel *Technical *College and has been a mechanic for about 33 years. In those 33years he has built several drag car motors as well as street motors, literally rewrote a section of the chevrolet maintenance manual for the first S10s, and everything in between. He is currently a heavy equipment mechanic and does a lot of fabricating for relocating parts, making heavy duty bumpers, building stands and carts to set drill rigs on, etc. You name he can do it.
** * *I would like to close by saying that before you go calling a person's project retarded you may want to reconsider saying that, to some people it may make perfect sense . I hope I have not offended you but dang namb it when you go saying stuff about my choice of project being retarded or questioning mine and my farther's *mechanical abilities, it gets the redneck in me going... It's a southern thing what else can I say. Oh and the electric stuff is a cake walk for us.

Let me see a basic build/ price sheet for a 400+hp stroker build... Including all the machine work, new parts etc.....Plus the cost of everything else to make it happen. Guarantee you don't pull it off for under 5k. When A lightning motor will drop right in for 5k and be a daily driver. I think the argument is not whether it can be done. With the right skills, money and time, anything is possible. But it doesn't make sense is what it comes down too. And that is why nobody has done it. Depending what kit you use, they will run you 1000-3500 just for the stroker kit. Throw in your heads, cams, oil pump, fuel system, exhaust etc... and yea. Now fabricate all that up to fit and work right on the F150 chassis, what do you have... a headache and empty pockets.

Thanks Gotts2BMe, I knew the electrical system was pretty much garbage (not quite that bad though, just thought it was a simple switch in my lever that activated the hubs) but we will strip pretty much all of it out and rewire it.
Every once in awhile someone comes and post there plan to do one of these swaps. They get told its nearly impossible and all some like this poster insist there gonna do it. Never seen one of them come back and talk about the finished product.
it's because they FAIL
I'd hate to beat a dead horse, but...
The 351W has the same bell housing as the 302.
Some of the [not Expeditions] Explorers came with a 302 coupled with a 4R70W tranny which is a direct bolt-up into a '98 F150.
So next you need a standalone tranny controller, ECU bypass (for PATS, etc), motor mounts, and accessory mounts. You shouldn't need much else...

The Explorers came with a 5L as late as 2002 to use up those motors.
Some Mercurys and Mazda also used the 5L motors.
Cross breeding with parts from these vehichles might be a way but a lot of work, trial and hassle and certainly not less expensive unless you get all the parts for near nothing.
The 5L motors were very much equipted differently the last few years of their life but again could be retrofitted backwards to the old style with parts from the 90s.
One good thing about them was the heads are sought after for performance, have the angled plugs and require specific headers if original cast irons are not used.
Good luck.

Sorry. Fixed.
Because the OP wanted to use a carb'd 351, sans the ECU.
The factory ECU assumes certain inputs from a running engine to control the transmission. Without those inputs, the ECU puts the tranny into "limp home" mode. The other alternative would be a 4R70W rebuild with mechanical innards.

Maybe noone comes back because they were treated like *******s for asking a question in the first place.I mean damn...they ask a legit question and then get prison raped and get made to look like an idiot for wanting to do something that involves more than just bolting stuff in factory holes.
Everyone that asks a question about doing something DIFFERENT isn't some pipedream ReRe....
I found this thread searching about a carbed 351w swap into a 98..was going to ask a question about ECU dependancies on some accessories....but i'll just work out the details on my own and let ya'll keep bolting **** into premade holes and thinking you're supreme beings for doing all that hard work.
Peace out : )
