Question Hard to start when cold.

I have a 2005 STX with 107,000 miles on it. When it is cold you have to turn the key on for 5 seconds twice then start it. When it is warm it will start like it always did. When the temperature outside is 60 or above you have to do the key thing about 5 times. My battery is fine but I think my fuel pump is losing pressure, but I would like some more input. What do ya'll think? Puzzled in Missouri!

you said 60? mmmh I missed that part I focused on the cold word, sorry my bad ( my battery was failing below 32)
anyway when my fuel pump started to fail time ago, it was hard to turn on the truck in the mornings only or after it was park for a long period of time, also when I was hitting the gas pedal the first "reaction" of the truck was like if it was about to stall, so the temperature was not affecting the pump... but that was my failure mode with the pump, it was solved when I put a new one

Have you done the obvious maintenance ? I mean what do you do if your lawnmower or weed-wacker doesn't start ? Check the plug right ?

Sooo, - provide us with your maintenance record and/or what you have done up to this point in order to troubleshoot the problem. That eliminates the guessing game.

Battery is about 2 years old and never had a problem. Fuel filter was changed about 2000 miles ago and it made no difference to the way it starts. Took it to a garage and they put it on the machine that cleans the injectors and valves and heads. it also made no difference.

have you done a fuel pressure test. do that. Rent the tool at auto zone for free and eliminate fuel pressure problems. minimum psi is about 35

I have a new set of plugs but the garage wanted $200.00 to chane them. I was told that there is a problem that the plugs could snap off in the heads due to the aluminium heads. So i am a little concerned about trying to change them myself. Also, I don't have the elongated socket that they tell me you need. Have you ever changed them in yours?

Yer gonna have to get em changed. Motorcraft plugs are best $200 isnt a bad deal. pay them and get it over with. Make sure the are equipped to extract broken plugs and all and find out how much they charge to extract them..

Let's see - you have 107k - the factory recommendation for plug changes was 100k but Ford has revised that to 60k - ya think ya might wanna change them?

By the way - if you have a 4.6 there are no issues with changing the plugs, it's very straightforward. It's the 5.4's that have issues. Where in SW MO are you?
