Possible engine swap. Need info!
Hey guys I'm looking into purchasing a 99 or 00 f150 scab with a cracked block. My plan is to fix it up and use it to haul my 4 wheeler.
Anyway I'm looking for the best options and opinions on what I can do. The factory configuration on this unit is a 4.6 with a 5spd manual. I'm not keen on putting another 4.6 2v back in unless I absolutely have to. I would Like to do a 5.4 or a 4.6 3v and 5 spd from an s197 mustang. What would be needed for either of these swaps? Can the stock 5spd hold up to either engine? Or am I stuck with another underpowered 4.6 2v?

If you are talking about a 2wd. The 4.6L has plenty of power. Not so much on the torque side.. If all you are planning is hauling camping gear, 4 wheeler etc and no heavy trailer, youll do just fine. If you plan on hauling a travel trailer or work trailer etc... well, that's just not the truck being its 2wd and a 5sp. But all your other regular things won't be an issue. You can add exhaust, intake mode and a tune and be plenty happy with the 4.6 in a 2wd truck. That 5sp would drive me nuts. And with a blown motor, if the body and all other parts are in good to great condition (no rust, tears in the interior, dents, faded paint etc...).. you shouldn't be paying anymore than 2k for that truck. If it's 2wd

my 4r100 (superduty automatic) fit fine (bolted into place with different holes for the crossmember on the frame), send five0merc a PM, he is getting ready to put a superduty manual ZF trans in his f150 along with a 5.4 w/ a supercharger. If the truck is a 99 you will have the older style dash without PATS and stuff which would probably make it an easier swap for you...if it is a 2000, you will have the newer digital dash with the PATS system and then you have to make sure all the electronics are happy and work together (can be a major pain if you dont have a complete donor vehicle!) I would talk to JMC and five0merc and see what they have to say about the manual transmissions in these trucks

I am putting a ZF6 out of a superduty in my truck. If I were you to make it easier go with a ZF5 out of a superduty. They both bolt up, but the 5 is shorter and is more of a bolt up. To get either you will need to do a body lift though. They are like 3 inches taller than the 150 trannies. With the 6 speed it is like 3 inches longer so you have to box more of the frame, move teh crossmember back, get new drive shafts made(shorter back and longer front). Plus if yours is a 4X4 if you go with the ZF5 you can bolt your stock transfer case to it. The ZF6 is 24 spline and ZF5 is 31 spline. There is a guy on here that put a ZF5 in an expedition. I will post his thread along with the thread about my ZF6 swap. If you have any other questions just ask. I will be happy to help in any way that I can. Oh yea and make sure to get whatever transmission out of a 5.4 or 6.8 gas superduty.

hes 2wd drive so no need for any of those goofy transfer cases and front drivelines! lol, 2wd will be a lot easier swap for him! does he really need to box the frame? I would bet he will have to modify the driveline either way so I bet in his application the 6 speed really wouldnt be much more work for him...what about electronics for the manual transmissions?
