Engine production date.

How do I find out the engine production date of my 2001 Expedition 5.4? I am on RockAuto trying to buy a timing set and it lists two by the same maker. One says, "For vehicles with an engine production date in 2001".

Odds are since its an 01, that the engine was built in 2000, but that just confused me.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Front timing cover, back of the heads and drivers cam cover should all have stickers with the production date. Front timing cover would be easiest to read

Thanks guys for the input. As always, this forum is a great help.

Ordered the parts to do the timing chain setup from rockauto. Good prices.

Thanks again,

It wouldn't be by a whole year though. My 99 truck... engine production date is 4-08-99. The replacement engine I bought from a 00, engine had a production date of 4-10-00. If the OP truck is a 2001, I don't think the engine would be pre 2001, it would have just been earlier that year. He is trying to find out if his engine is from 00. I would think it would just be early 2001. But could be wrong. Unless his truck has a production date before or around March of 2001, The engine should still be 2001.

no it wouldnt be by more then a few days. Never know though unless you the original owner. My 99 has the engine out of an 03 truck with a build date of 8-02. Gotts is right about the valve cover just look at that.

It sounds like he is looking to install new timing components. Any model year chains, guides, and tensioners will work. The only change made that would be critical was the crank timing gear and HDR wheel and I'm not sure off the top of my head what year that was. Tensioners went to plastic but are interchangable. Regardless he could just reinstall the same crank gear and HDR he has as they are not parts that wear out (rarely anyway).
