excessive smoke

so i noticed the other day that the truck seems to be smoking a bit more than usual. when it was in the 60's i noticed it was, and figured it was a little cold and maybe that was it. but after i turned off the truck this morning i noticed it smoked for about 10 seconds. and it was in the 60's, a little too warm i thought to see smoke. it seems like something is off, or am i being paranoid?

ETA: sig didnt show up. 2000 5.4L, 173k miles. SI/DO exhaust

What color is the smoke white, black, blue. Any systems, running rough, truck dieing, hard start etc. Are there any codes being thrown have there been any recently at all? What engine is this? Have you checked your coolant to see if it is low, oil to see if it is low. Compression, and leakage test and there is a test for carbon in the anti freeze (although I do not recall the name). Thats all I can think of at the moment.

well my transmission is almost dead (being replaced today), so its hard to tell if its sluggish at all due to engine. white smoke, and no hard starting. when i checked last week the only code was transmission related, i will check again today. and ill check my oil and coolant, but this truck has never burned oil and coolant was filled awhile back. i'll get back to report later

Well once you get it back from the shop check as many things as you are able fluid levels, compression test, etc. Just drive it keep an eye on it otherwise there isnt much you can do. If it aint broke dont fix it. My truck does this but then again i am up in Northern WI.

Its called a hydrocarbon test. If there are hydrocarbons in the coolant then you have a blown head gasket. Dealers, and some repair shops will perform the test. I believe Auto Zone and some others may rent the kit so you can perform the test yourself.
