Engine change
Engine change
Good Morning all,
A simple question and I will include as much information as I possibly can to prevent repeats and uninformed answers.
I just purchased a 1997 F-150 4X4 supercab with a manual transmission.
The previous owner purchased the truck as a project. The previous owners to him had installed a used 4.6l W in the truck to replace the blown original 4.6 w. The donor vehile was a Lincoln of the same year (1997) but the exact model is unknown.
The person I bought this truck from stated that he had the wiring harness and the intake from the Lincoln to go with the truck however he cannot find that now. He is telling me that I am required to replace the entire wiring harness and the intake as the Lincoln system does not match the Ford truck version.
So in short (ha).....if both engines were the same year....same size (4.6) and both Ford products why would I have to change the intake, wiring harness and the computer?
Now...one point...if the original engine was a Romeo does that make a differnance???.....I do not have the VIN # as of right now to verify a W or R...as I am out of the US.....but as he tells me....both were W....so in my opinion the intake and the original harness/computer should work well????
Thanks

You are correct. Basicly everything will work ok. The only thing he may be refering to regarding the wire harness is the engine harness for the Lincoln and truck are different. They have different intake manifolds so the direct vacum and some wire connections may be to short, to long, or on the wrong side of the intake. You can use the car intake with its own harness or use a truck intake with a truck harness to keep things simple. If you use the coil packs then the truck PCM will work. If you want COP's then a different PCM must be used.
Front covers are different
Exhaust manifolds are different and EGR tube.
Oil filter adapter is different
Oil pan may or may not fit.
A few other things as well but the best thing is to get the car engine and just swap these truck parts over to it. The base engines are the same. Also a W code is a Romeo build, a 6 code is a Windsor and even these are interchangable with the right swapping of components.
