302 V8 Valve Lifter question

I have a 83 F150 302 V8 AOD transmission. I removed one of the valve lifters and I was wondering if there are any parts that move in the lifter? Thanks

Yessir, you'll find an oil cup that has a spring under it that moves. This is how it pumps oil to the rocker arm. The cup returns to it's extended position by the spring and oil pressure.

The motor seems to have a lot of mileage due to the wear pattern on the lifter. The motor has been making a ticking noise that sounds like a lifter, but none of the rocker arms are loose. Also none of the pushrods are bent and all the lifters are moving like they need to.

If it's a dull lifter noise, I wouldn't worry about it. My 91 Bronco 5.0 has had a dull lifter noise since it had 19 miles on it when I bought it. The dealer said it's normal noise. I guess they were right as it now has over 123,000 noisy miles on it. If it's more of a clatter or metallic noise, you gotta problem. These lifters can also collapse which means the oil cup won't return back to the top of the lifter. It won't pump much oil to the rocker and will be a hard noise. One way to find out is to run the engine at idle with the suspected valve cover off. It's messy but you know what's going on by watching for oil at the rockers.

Try replacing a quart of engine oil with MMO about 500mi before your next oil change. Then make sure you're using the correct weight of oil when you change it.

And use a good oil filter: Wal-Mart, MotorCraft, Wix. NOT Fram or the no-names.
