Strange noise when accelerating

I'm going to do my best to describe this problem.

When I hit the accelerator I sometimes get a noise almost like something is scraping. Like a brake pad stuck or something to that sound affect.

When I let off the accelerator it goes away. It's not consistent, almost seems random to me.

When driving to my destination last night it seemed to happen at 2250RPM on a some what regular basis and on the way back from the destination it was at 1500RPM when I was getting the noise.

The noise is more prominent on the passenger side.

I just picked up this truck and have a 30 day warranty. I've got an appointment on Tuesday to have it looked at. But if someone knows what it might be based off of the horrible description and it's simple to fix I'll take a crack at it.

I know I'm not giving you guys much to work with here but it's all I got at this point.

Thanks.

More info on your truck like year, engine, miles, etc. will help. Check the cat heat shields. They get loose and the sound could be discribed as a scraping noise. Detonation comes to mind as well.

2005 F150 XLT 62k miles 5.4

I will check those, thanks for the tip.

On the way home it was 2250RPM at 40MPH you would hear it.

Or the IWE system.

What is the IWE?

My wife drove it for a bit tonight so I had a good chance to listen to it. It, to me, sounds like it's coming from the wheel well and occurs most times going uphill.

Block the wheels, put her in drive. Apply load while stationary, attempt problem reoccurrence. You'll need an assistant.

I had battery acid burn into one of the lines leading to my 4WD actuator. It caused my front end to make something similar to grinding, or a scratching noise, over 1800 RPM. The 4WD attempted to engage without me telling it to is what it was. It caused no damage, but it was annoying as heck until I got the line fixed. But it solved my problem. Perhaps maybe?

IWE = integrated wheel end. Your front wheel drive auto locking hubs. Vacuum keeps them disengaged, lack of vacuum engages them. You may have low vacuum due to a leak or other malfunction that's partially engaging them and making noise, or the IWE's themselves may be going.

Yea, those lines by the battery will break on their own and with time. They become very brittle, - with any movement of the vac harness, they can break or crack.

Ford is well aware of this. They have a TSB on it. Here's the fix -

That looks a little more involved than I'd like to get in the next 2 days with not knowing anything about it. So I guess I'll just let the dealership take care of it.

I'll take the wheel off and see if it's anything that might be blatantly obvious as well.

Good Idea. Sounds like the cat shield IMO. I had an 04 repaired @ the dealership free, -under the 80 -100 mile emissions warranty. You have this. If your under the mileage, -mention to the service rep, this suspicion.
