When I start my 02 f150 5.4L it chatters, very noticeably with the hot weather. Is this something to worry about? Please help me out, Im getting paranoid. Also i bought some lucas oil treatment to put in, should I or should I not use it?

My buddy told me its the timing chain guides, let me know please.

What filter and oil are you running? Is it possible you have a Fram filter?

Im using Valvoline 5-20 and not sure of the filter, but its not a Fram

 

If it is not a Wix, Purolater or Motorcraft filter, I woul dchange the filter and see if it makes a difference. If it is a cheap filter, it may have an anti-drain back valve that has collapsed.

 

If its not the oil filter then remove the serpentine belt and start it up. If the noise is gone then suspect one of your FEAD components such as alternator, P/S ,A/C, or one of the belt pulleys or tensioner. If the noise still exists with the belt off then start listening to various areas of the engine, front cover, cam cover, etc. (while someone else starts the engine) with a mechanics stethescope. Narrow the area down and then go from there. Good luck

 

One of the best filters to run is the standard Motorcraft 820S - you need one with the silicone valve (the "S" in the filter number). Personally, I run Castrol Syntec 5w30 instead of the recommended 5w20 in my '09 5.4 - it is almost as thin as a 5w20 (the Syntec is really close) and has a significantly higher HT/HS than any 5w20 (2.9 vs. 2.65 for Motorcraft, 2.6 for Mobil1, 2.7 for Amsoil). The thicker oil will make hot weather start-up quieter.

 

Ok guys I took off the old "valvoline" filter, and replaced it with a Purelator "pure One" filter, but I havent driven it yet, Ill keep everyone posted with the results. If this doesnt fix/help the problem, Im going to a thicker oil.

 

You changed the filter but didn't have time to jump in it and start it? lol. Joking.

I would be careful with a heavier oil, someone else can comment on why. There are some tolerance issues with these motors when it comes to viscosity. If the new filter doesnt fix the problem, then there are more steps to take to diagnose it before you go throwing heavier oil at it. You may have a problem with timing chain tensioner or guides, or anything a long those lines. Maybe a video of the start up? Hint: don't use the camera in the engine bay, picks up to much distortion, try somewhere just outside the hood, by the wipers or something. could be as simple as an exhaust leak, ive heard exhaust manifold leaks so bad that they sounded like pistons high fiving eachother on start up

 

Stay with 5-20 on these engines.

 

I bought a new 2000 F150 XLT 5.4 Supercab 4x4 and back then Ford recommended 5w30 so I don't think it will hurt.

I suspect the problem is that your timing chain tensioner is leaking down. I had this problem sometimes on my Mark VIII Lincoln 32 valve engine.

 

Ok the Purilator Pure one filter seemed to help a little bit, yesterday I changed the oil to 5-30, I will keep everyone posted of my results.
