5.4 Swap

I ditched the idea on the PI heads I was looking at, and bought this instead. More pics to come as the swap begins. I have a 98 4.6 romero/4r70w and this is an 2002 5.4

With the 32.5 tall tires and the 3.55s on the dying 4.6. I think at this point the v6 would be a jump. I'm a bit nervous on the swap.. Lots of electronics...

Stuck already? Haven't even started yet lol. Theres not much wiring too it at all compared to other swaps Ive done on other vehicles. These have a main harness, other than that... Theres a small handfull of clips. Once I got my motor in, I think it was only a matter of an hour or 2 before it fired up.

Start by taking the throttle body and intake manifold off which includes disconnecting the fuel rail and other things. Then drop the ac pump, but leave it connected, just unbolt and leave to the side. Get the radiator out, power steering lines need disconnected.. Just get everything up top. Then head down low, all the bell housing bolts and exhaust. I didnt even take my tires off lol. But I did take the fender liners out to access each side. Youll get it. Good luck, your gonna love it, whole new truck.

How many miles on that motor?

jbrew- done. Thanks a ton!
Toyz- Yeah It's pretty intimidating... I don't know why ford had to put it half way under a firewall. I own a computer company, and while I'm pretty decent working on cars I'm no expert like I would be on a PC. I'm doing it at a friends shop so he will be overlooking to make sure I'm on the right track. I'm very excited for the new motor. The one that's in the truck has 135k, and had coolant in the oil a while back so i poured some of that Bars head gasket stuff in there which cleared up the milky oil and the excess exhaust pressure in the cooling system but it hasn't acted right since then... It's just so low on power and mpg has dropped significantly to 13-14ish though on the trip to pick this up I averaged almost 19. There are 120k on the motor, it came with some papers that showed strong compression and good oil pressure. Came from http://www.a1autorecyclers.com/

If you think its intimidating now, wait till you see all 500lbs of it 7' off the ground dangling above your beloved truck lol. Its not too bad. Ide do it again tomorrow if needed. Id throw some new motor mounts in there while you have it out. Got mine from rockauto.com for fairly cheap. Pick yourself up some felpro intake manifold gaskets, throttle body, iac and egr gaskets. New plugs, motorcraft sp-479 installed dry @ 28ft/lbs. Maybe send your injectors off to get cleaned. Stuff like that will help make it like new when you get it all together.

I'm sure.... While it's paid off, it was my biggest investment. I have two sets of motor mounts, one that came on it and ones that are on it. I'll check it out. I will get all the necessary gaskets since it came with the intake off. I have perfect intake gaskets that were new. Also have two sets of injectors- I believe I will use the ones from the 02 motor since it seams like consensus says they are a better injector- different spray pattern. Plug change was the first thing I thought of since I know how much of a bear it is with the motor in the truck. I wish I had a good diagram of the vacuum lines since I believe they moved a bunch of it up to the throttle body.. Or somewhere in that area.
I'm anxiously awaiting jbrews directions on the removal of engine. I will post a ton of pics once the project starts.

Yah, i swapped a 99 5.4 for a 00 5.4 and had to fiddle around with some vacuum lines around the throttle body had some differences. Figured it all out and It all came together though. Your 4.6 to 5.4 will have some differences. I will say this, instead of spending 45 mins and 5' of extensions to get to the top 2 bell housing bolts, with the intake mani off you can reach them from on top. And if that motor has been sitting for over a year, drop a half a few squirts of oil down into each cylinder during the plug change, just dont get oil on the threads or your torque specs will be off. I used a squirt can, but still managed to get a bit on threads, which i cleaned and then adjusted the torque a bit. After your done, flip the inertia switch at the passenger kick panel, turn it over for a good 30 seconds or so to build up oil pressure and lube the cylinders. Then flip it back on and fire it up.

Don't forget the beer

Right, Motor Mounts, - good idea for sure. Don't forget the tranny mount tho , - they all work together. I'm on my third trans mount lol. - Yea, their only good for a hundred thousand, - or less, - there wasn't anything left of my last one. Your LS in the rear end acts goofy without a good trans mount. The clutch pac will start hanging up and slip, and that's not by design lol. So good mounts are more important than one might think, - they don't have to be broke to be bad . Something else that happens with a bad Trans Mount is eventually, - you'll start to shear exhaust manifold studs, - from the firewall forward, - like domino's. When the trans mount is bad it's metal to metal- vibrates the hell out of the exhaust and also puts downward pressure on the manifolds, breaks the spot welds on your converter heat shields, as well. Lets see what else ?...? Ahh, I think that will do it for now.

WAIT! BEER!! ~

Hmm, never thought of that. I never put a new trans mount, so these have 125k. Wonder if thats why I have started to develop a light exhaust manifold leak on the drivers side. I know they are notorious for leaking, mostly on the passenger side. But I figured with the super low miles this motor has, that it is premature. Just started hearing it the other day on start ups. And, have had some weird issue on 2 or 3 occasions with the rear differential hanging up when I am on a slope, trying to turn in reverse, thought it was my brakes. I'm opting for new gears later when bigger tires go on so, not to worried about it for now..? Hrm, guess new mounts will be ordered soon. Cant be coincident I have had these new problems, and then read this. Maybe the beers impaired my decisions and failure to purchase a new trans mount during my swap.

No problem, - Sent a 98 removal and a 02 install. Any questions, post up.

Don't disconnect your AC lines. They made that a little confusing in the procedure. Just move everything to the side -away from harm upon Rem/+Install.

Maybe it's just me, -I never thought beers impaired anything but driving..?

A few tricks when replacing. - Mark the two mount bolts on the crossbar before removing, just for reference and support engine as well. You support the engine under the oil pan. Yes, it can take it, you just want to take the weight off the crossbar and keep alignment, - uknow, from flywheel to pig.
