2000 4.6 TO '97 4.6 engine swap

Can I use a 2000 F150 4.6 engine with the coil packs on the spark plugs in my '97 F150 that has the 4.6 with spark plug wires and the coils on the front of each head?

easiest thing would be to make the coil packs work.

there are some other things different between those two model year engines. i advise you to do some research before doing the swap. lots of info on this site.

Use the 97 engine harness and 97 coil packs with regular sparkplug wires on the 2000. This way you use the 97 PCM as well. Makes for an easier swap. Take chiefs advice on researching this swap as like he said there are a few other fairly minor differences between the two. Good luck.

^^^ NO

no reason to change ECM's that only adds additional money to the swap

OP, is there a specific reason you do not want to go with another PI engine???

I think that is what I am saying. He can keep the PCM/ECM he has in his 97 truck (97 PCM) if he uses the 97 coil packs. If he goes to COP then he must change engine harness and PCM....The way I read it he has a 97 F150 that he wants to put a 2000 engine in correct?

NO he does not have to change the ECM if he changes to the coil packs and wires

now if he changes to a 4r100 transmission or a 6.8 V-10 then yes he'll beed to change his ECM

we're both saying the same thing in two different ways

as long as the OP keeps his current ECM he'll be fine with either ignition system.

I miss understood the original post, I thought he was putting the older engine in the newer truck

My '97 F150 has a 4.6 with sparkplug wires. I would like to install the 2000 4.6 with coilpacks on each sparkplug. What changes do I need to make? What I am reading is that I should use the '97 coils, harness, and plug wires on the 2000 4.6?

correct. couple of other sensors and things got deleted or moved around between those years. can't recall what all that involves though.
