2006 5.4 FF Needs new motor. 5.4 differences

I need a motor for my truck it is a 2006 f150 crew with a 5.4 ff. I took the truck to the dealer and they said it has jumped time by at least 1 tooth. They wanted $1000 to just give me an answer what exactly broke. I have since decided to just get another motor and swap them. I called my motor guy and he has 2 5.4 3v but he said they have aluminum valve covers and if my motor had black cover made of plastic then it is the wrong motor. Anyone have any insight into this?

Why do you say "if my motor had black plastic covers"? If you have an '06 and it has black plastic covers, you don't have a 5.4. They started the aluminum covers in '04 with the 5.4 3V. To my knowledge they still used the black plastic covers on the 4.6 2V. Please clarify as to whether it has aluminum covers or black plastic covers.

The truck is in service and I could not check to verify when I called on the motor. The question he asked was does your motor have plastic valve covers. If it does this motor will not work. I the are aluminum it will.

I just picked up the truck from service and it does have aluminum valve covers. So I guess the motor will work. Now I just hope that this motor holds up long enough to pick up the motor and make it to the shop. Thanks for the help!

even if it doesn't hold up who cares? it's already trashed according to the dealer whats the worst that could happen?

personally i wouldn't buy a ford "test" motor if it is what i think it is. they subject those test engines to some pretty extreme crap to see the upper limits of what it can handle. i'd imagine they'd be pretty trashed as well. now i could be completely wrong.

Why would you need to swap 'em? The Flex Fuel have better components that straight gas.

I went and looked at the motor and it turns out it is a 08 5.4 3 valve and its complete. Has the ECU as well as headers and a flywheel. Can I put a 2008 5.4 in my 2006 f-150?

So I picked up the motor today but I am not sure what I am going to need to swap over from my old motor. Any advice on swapping these motors would be appreciated.
