5.4 differences between 97 and 08

hey im new here and had a question. i have a 97 f150 4x4 with the 5.4. the motor blew up and i found a wrecked 2008 expedition. i know the 08 had the PI heads but i was wondering what the differences are other then that and the tune. the expedition still has all the running gear and wiring harness and i need to know whether i should buy just the motor or the whole thing.

i have seen threads on here about some of the newer 5.4's but not anything as new as 2008.

thanks

its not a swap. The 3v is not a practical replacement period. Find a 97-03 truck 2v or the e series vans still use the 2v and thats a swap. 3v takes so much it aint worth it.

yes, the '99-'03 5.4 motors in F-150's have PI heads, the superduty and E series didn't get the PI heads until later

Awakening a dead thread! lol

Can someone tell me when did the Expedition get the 5.4 PI?
I have a 98 that is in another state, but is going to get dumped unless it has the PI engine.
I'm not there to take a look, and was wondering if I want to keep it for the engine.

To help decipher what was going on in early '99,
if the 5.4L was the 'top engine' available for a model then a '99 would have the PI (i.e. F-150, Expedition).

If there was bigger option motor to be had (V10) then the early '99s got the non-PI (i.e. F-250, E-150).

I don't know if this plan was related to limited availability or a money scheme to force the purchase of the bigger engine option, probably a combination of the two.

Actually the non PI motors have there positives. The million mile van is a non PI engine. I have a non PI engine in my E350 and I love it. Reliable as hell. Have the PI engine in my f150 and yeah it has a little more power but I wouldn't jettison a truck just because it lacked the PI heads..

Why I was asking, is that I'm planing to build an engine and transmission for my 97 scab. I'm planning to keep it for the rest of my life whether I drive it much or not. To me the 961/2 models were an instant classic. The only pick up I would want over it would be an F1, but I want to own both models.
For this one I just want to turn it into my toy when I decide to quit using it daily. I just love this Truck. But Terajerame got me interested in a pro charger, so I kinda want a 5.4 PI to go under the hood

My wife just went and looked the title up, and came back and told me it is a 99. I thought it was a 98. So according to Raouls post it is a PI. Is that right? My Stepdaughter has been driving for about 5 years. With her living in Houston, I can't work on it when something goes wrong, and it's starteing to have one problem after another. I'm not even sure how many miles are on it, because I haven't seen it in a while, and the maintenace record is in the glove compartment.

But this is the truck I want the interior and engine for. I haven't even checked to see if the trans will work or not. I've not done an engine swap in years, and the electronics of the deal are way past my knowledge. So it will be a big challenge for me.
The last engine tranny swap I did was sometime around 1980, I think it was a 72 Lamans to a 400, with a 4 speed alluminum cased muncie. Something tells me this is going to be much more complex

In a nutshell the 4.6, 5.4 and the 6.8 V10 all share the same bellhousing bolt pattern. They all share the same engine mount points. Mechanically speaking they will all fit in the engine bay of the F-150 and bolt up to your transmission. The 1997 and 98 MY f-150s had the less complicated electronics of all the trucks. If you degrade the electronics of a newer engine you can control it using your existing Computer. The exception being the V10 as it has 2 more cylinders. You will need a V10 computer. You could even run the 3 valve V8 engines using your set up. The swap notes in my sig will give you a better idea of what is involved in a swap.

Thanks For the post JMC. When I get closer to starting the project, I'll start a thread on it from the ground up on the rebuild. I'll be getting the Expy back from Houston the July 4th holiday. Then it may be awhile before I get started. I was looking in the how to articles, at Adrian Speeders Transmission page. But I know ill have to have a different tailshaft for the transmission. But I'll have the complete donor for the computer.
Any other suggestions or pit falls to tell me about?:santa:
