Exactly. No question. Too bad you are wasting oil as well.

True Norm, but there are extentuating circumstances. I have never worried about changing my oil by time, but I do change it every 3000 miles because since I retired my miles are almost all local in town miles (what would classify as "severe" as far as oil change goes) If I ran open road miles I probably would run 7500 or so on a change. I have always changed my own oil (and I mean ALWAYS) and always use good oil and filters and it only costs me about $20. plus tax. (7 qts. MC 5-20 Semi and MC filter)

Could be too much fuel or too little air or both.
Quite true- I bought my wife a new Taurus SE in '95 w/3.0 V-6 That sucker was a perfect car and in the 7 years we had it, not one minutes trouble. It got a steady 32 MPG on the highway at 75 and because it was sipping the fuel, the oil stayed really clean. I bought her a Camry in '02 W/2.4 4 cyl. and that thing has also been absolutely trouble free after almost 8 years and it gets 33 MPG at 75 on the open road. That oil also stays extremely clean because of the excellent mileage. My '04 F-150 W/5.4 3V is as dirty at 1200 as either of the other cars were at 3k mi. It's not excessively dirty, just burns a whole lot more fuel, so more of the by-products get into the CC.
