Ive got an 05 f-150 with the 5.4. i know that its goin to have a little ticking cause of the lifters but this is a deeper knock coming from the center of the motor, roughly around were the intake is. I can really hear it if im against a brick wall at like a drive thru. I can also hear it when im driving with the windows up, it reminds me of a diesel....but its not so I took it to the dealer and they claim its running right. I dont believe them one bit anyone else have this same noise? and maybe an idea on wat i can do.

 

search " Cam Phaser" sounds like thats your problem. You must have some warranty left or the Ford dealer would have told you that.

 

mine had a slight knocking in the center towards the driver side. dealer put the cam phasers in . they told me that since the 04 ( which mine is ) came out they have a updated modified kit that supposedly fixed the issue but anyone knows how the dealership goes.

 

Cam phaser is your knock, which is normal. Ticking is your injectors, which is normal.
