Cam Phaser

I think i have the famous cam phaser tick. Has anyone had one to just go all the way out? And i am wanting to get a hypertech programmer, will the programmer do anymore harm to the cam phasers.

The cam phaser is more of a knock. If you hear a light ticking, it may just be the injectors openning and closing. The tuner won't affect the cam phaser if you really have that problem. For more on the cam phasers, look int the index of the Articles and How To section.

Ticking sounds could possibly be an exhaust manifold leak. The fuel injectors always tick.

When is the last time you got an oil change? I started getting that ticking sound and it went away/quieted down a lot. It had extended mileage oil in it from the dealer i think cause the oil change service tag was for 10k miles after i bought it. I did the oil early and used motor craft oil. Is the ticking sound about the same frequency as idle and you only hear it in the low rpm (1200 rpm or less), or was it fast or slower than that? That is the only time I could hear it.
