Help!

Hey all!

My truck broke down last wednesday. It started sputtering as I was trying to pass someone on the freeway. It never recovered. I had to have it towed.

The dealer tore into it, and has discovered a bad injector, a plugged catalytic converter, and burned exhaust valves...all on the right side of the engine. They of course do not want to replace all of the injectors. I am so angry as this screwed up my weekend trip to Lake Tahoe. I had to borrow an all wheel drive car.

Anyway, they are not saying wether or not this will be covered under warranty. Ford issending an inspector out to look at it. Any ideas on how to handle this?

Regards!

Usually what an inspector will do is look for modifications or signs of mods that may have been removed prior to taking the vehicle to the dealer for warranty work. Mods such as Nitrous, Blower, underdrive pulleys, etc. also signs of abuse. Gather your maintenace records. Oil changes would not be a reason for this failure but having the records will help. They won't change all of the injectors because the others are probably fine. The fuel injector failure more than likely leaned things out enough to cause the other problems. Unless one or more of the mods mentioned above were being used. If you are still under warranty these repairs should be covered since it appears the injector was the root cause of failure. Good luck.

Thank you for the reply!

The inspector looked at the truck today I think...they have to kick it upstairs due to the dollar amount of the repair? The service advisor said the repair is right around $ 7k so far....that is for a head, cat, and injector + labor?

They don't want to admit that the injector is the cause of all of this...I guess they want to collect the $ 100.00 deductable for the extended warranty. They still have not agreed that this is a warranty repair.

I have had the oil changed at about every 5-6K miles. The only mod is a K&N air filter (just the filter...no intake)

Regards!

They can install a new engine for $7,000. Whatever... All you really care about is that it gets fixed right with no money out your pocket. I would expect to pay the $100.00 though as thats usually the deductable on an extended warranty regardless of cause. Unless you have left something out here I don't see how they can deny the repair under your warranty. They have to make a case for the repair or they get stuck with the cost so it takes some time to get things approved etc. Good luck.

I am obviously no expert in this matter.

But, if your warranty covers this mishap, and it is no fault of your own, how could they deny to repair or replace?

If they don't cover it, small claims court may be in your near future.

Good look bro. Seriously.

Thank you again for your replies.

I wouldn't ordinarily be concerned. But even last nights conversation with the service advisor seemed to indicate that there was a remote possibility this wouldn't be covered. I agree with y'all that this should be a no brainer. I haven't left anything out of this story. This truck is my one and only vehicle. I don't beat it up, but i also don't baby it...I just drive it! I may go up to the dealer today to pay my truck a visit!

BTW, in my area there was 5 dealers within 30 miles. We are down to 2! Not much choice of where to take my truck.

Regards!

K&N air filters need to be oiled in order to trap any smaller dirt particles. This oil can foul the mass airflow sensor which is just downstream of the air filter and when that sensor is fouled it will return erroneous values which can cause the air/fuel ratio to go wonky.

If this is the cause of your failures, I would not expect Ford to cover it under warranty. Of course they might cover it anyway as goodwill. Hope for the best.

There is a letter out by Ford that extends the warranty on injectors for the 05s. If it is an injector, it should be covered by this extended warranty. The injector leaks and causes hydrolock, destroying the engine. Sounds as if that is your problem. If they determine it was an injector, you should have no problem getting a new engine. The weird thing, they will want to replace just the bad injector. If it were mine, I would pay the difference abd have the remaining injectors replaced. I will see if I can find Stealths thread for his rebuild.

Read my thread and you should find a copy of Ford Customer Satisfaction Program 07M08 which covers the 05 5.4 3v fuel injectors up to 11 years and 120,000 miles.

If it's an injector you're going to get all the affected parts replaced, except for the injectors that haven't failed. I'd go ahead and cough up the cash and have the other injectors replaced.

ETA: I don't have time to look in the thread but I'll post a copy of the letter when I get home from work.

OK, here is a .pdf of the injector letter.

Thanks all!

Yeah, I was thinking about having all of the injectors changed. On the other hand if it is $ 7k for each fix, I would lmao if the remaining 7 injectors failed before the warranty was up...would cost me $ 700.00 but cost ford $ 49k. Of course, I only have 6 months or 19k miles left on the extended warranty.

A guy could dream!
