My electric heater blew out.

I was pulling out of my driveway and my electric heater blew out. Can I just put a frost plug in the hole. I know this is probably a stupid question cus that is probably what was there before it was installed. I just want to be sure. Also, what is the proper way of putting one in? I bought a steel one. Will it be ok if i just put that in all on its own or is it guaranteed to leak if I dont use some sort of sealant?
