Engine problem...very strange.

I have a 98 f150 4.6L V8 210,000km 2wd

The problem : I start my truck in the morning (engine is cold) i drive around the truck reaches its normal runnin temp and warm air is coming from the vents...all of a sudden cold air starts coming out of the vents and my temp slowly starts to drop back to the C. Then it starts warming back up to normal temp (air still cold) then bam! the needle pins to red H and my oil light comes on. Sometimes the check engine will come on and my truck will nearly die. Other times is pops back down to normal temp and warm air comes from the vents. If the check engine comes on and my truck runs bad I pull over shut the truck down and instantly start it back up with normal running temp and no running problems and hot air blowing out of the vents. The truck doesnt seem to be running hot at this time cause theres no sign of steam or hissing our anything. Ive changed the thermo, the overflow cap and my CHT sensor because the check engine came up with a p1299 code (over heated cylinder head) engine has oil and fluid and it still does it. Is my head gasket going. The fluid in the overflow does smell kinda funny and is a bit foggy at times... any help is greatly appreciated thanks guys sorry for the story

There is a kit that can test for the presence of combustion gases in the coolant. I think Autozone rents them out.

I had exactly the same thing going on with my '97 F150 4.6 W. My problem was the thermostat and the coolant wasn't up to the level it needed to be I found out. That was corrected and it is running great now. Good luck.

just by opening the cap and smelling it i can tell there is some weird gasses in that overflow. and the water is a light orange. My thermo is just replaced 2 days ago...

You should definitely get the combustion gas test kit and check it out. I just finished replacing the head gaskets on mine, and before the change my coolant kept turning a nasty rusty brown and definitely smelled like combustion. I live in Miami, FL, so I never noticed anything weird like losing my heater as its always hot here and I never use the heater, but the overflow tank was constantly burping out gas and the rusty coolant was a dead give away for me.

X3 - They carry some cool kits, I like the colored smoke kits.
