Oil Change question
#17
Well from what I have read so far, sounds like I might as well just stick with the MotroCraft oil and filter. I know when my wife and I first got her 07 Acura TL, her on dash comp. was reading like 26mpg. I changed the oil right away, being as the dealer couldn't tell me when the oil was last changed. I put MotorCraft 5w20 blend in and the MPGs went up to 28 in no time. I have even seen it hit 30. It seems like her Vtec liked the MC stuff. Another question. How about a WIX filter? A buddy of mine had a 06 F150 work truck, until he switched jobs. He had a WIX filter(replacement for the FL820s) and had no use for it, so it gave it to me. I just put it on my truck when I changed my oil a couple days ago. I ALWAYS use the MotorCraft oil filter because I have heard bad stories about Fram and other brands causing our engines to run rough. This WIX seems OK so far. Any opinions on that?

I disagree with Labnerd on the K&N oil filters. Air filters... agree 1000 percent.
I have specs for K&N oil filter media (not the modular, however, though I think the same media is used in many apps) and while their numbers are not the best in the aftermarket biz, they are certainly good... likely as good as the Motorcraft. With the Motorcraft, it's just about impossible to get any specs (if someone has them, I'd love to see). Both are well constructed filters and I generally prefer the threaded end bypass, though many experts think it's not a vital difference (still researching that for myself)
Here are the latest K&N Filter Specs for a K&N NP-6001 (Ford Powerstroke Filter) and if I am correct about the media, it may well be what you get with the modular version of the K&N. The flow and bust specs will not apply, however:
10 um- 53.1 %
20 um- 95.4 %
30 um- 99.9 %
Capacity- 55.4 grams
Hydrostatic Burst- 558 psi
Element Collapse- 175 psid
Flow Rate- 20 GPM (J-806)
Assuming I did it right, here are the Betas- 10/20/30=2.1/21.7/1000
That doesn't compare to an Amsoil filter, PureOne or a Royal Purple, but it's better than a comparable Wix for the same app. (which is 2/20=10/30 or 50% @ 10 micron and 95% 30 micron) and is reputedly equal to or better than the MC (and I again lament that we can't easily get specs for the MC filters). The FL820S is a very nicely built filter, but I'm not sure the media is anything to crow about.
As to oil, the MC semi-syn is a sleeper and a serious bargain. It's less expensive than anything that performs as well. I'd use it without fear for a 7500 mile interval (if the driving situation fit). If I didn't have stacks of oil to try, that's what I would be using.
RP... I think it's an oil people love to hate. Their marketing department is annoying and seemingly overreaches quite regularly, but it's a very good oil. All the RP bashing inspired me to try it actually. I have been testing some and recently made a 14.5 month, 7500 mile run that delivered a stellar UOA (see below). Coulda easily gone 10K. I now have a Royal Purple filter on with another fill of RP 5W20 and WILL run 10K and two years or so. We'll see!

It's not, unfortunately. I cut apart a MC FL820S and I have a PureOne PL24651 for the modular application and I can see some major differences in their construction. For one, the PureOne doesn't have the threaded end bypass that Ford mandates for the MC (no a big deal, but I prefer them). I haven't cut the PureOne open yet (it's new) but I strongly doubt the MC has the same media in it, nor the same 99.9% filtration at 20 microns that the PureOne does. Would love to be proven wrong! Purolater builds the MC filters under contract to a contracted specification.
The PureOne, incidentally, may be the best performing filter at the best price out there. According to the specs released by Purolater, it's on par with the Amsoil EaO (built by Donaldson) and the Royal Purple (a high end filter built by Champion Labs). I have cut a PL30001 (FL-1A equiv.) apart, and frankly, it's not as well constructed as the Amsoil or the RP... but does that really matter all that much?
