Help - Need the Gurus!

Looking at purchasing a 1999 F150 with a bad 5.4 motor for ~1500

Ive been looking into engine options and there are a few for sale locally, but I don't know what necessarily is involved.
If you could look at the options below, and provide input, it would be greatly appreciated. Both engines are reasonably priced . I would need to act fast to get the truck.

Option 1: 5.4 Engine for sale locally with low miles out of a 2007 police expedition..

Option 2: 5.4 Engine out of a 2005 F250 with low miles as well. The guy is also selling the pairing transmission.

Ive been doing a lot of searches through the threads on different engine swaps, and I figured I'd start a new thread because I haven't been able to turn up the answers I need..

I know that there has been a few different 5.4's in production and I don't know how they all interchange with each other. The two engines I have found are from newer trucks (07 & 05) and im worried about engine harnesses and sensors. Does anyone know the compatability of the earlier models and the later? Since it has a 5.4 orginially, I assume it wouldn't be too much of a headache, but I want to cover all my bases. Im not affraid to have to swap things back and forth, I just want to make it work.

The other Idea im tossing around, because the miles on the truck is high, is going with option 2, and buying the transmission along with it. That way, I would have low mile engine and trans in this potential. My concern is that because it's out of a F250, it may not fit, or mount, or work without substansial modification? Will the driveline work?

Please Help Guys! Im tired of staring in your avatars and signitures of your trucks! I want my own!

Anything is appreciated, I will be checking this thread often!

99 is a 2v 5.4 engine. You would want to stay with the 2v 3v swaps are not practical. 2004 was the last year of the 2v in the f150 but the f250 might be a 2v not sure about the expedition either so make sure.. I found an engine out of an 03 f150 for my 99 that has 41k on it for $1300

Just a FYI on the police engines. Having worked on many 4.6 police return engines I can tell you that even though it may have low miles it very well may have high hours. The police as we all know tend to run radar a lot meaning the vehicle sits for hours, days, months on all shifts just idleing in fact they usually never shut them off while on duty. This one may not have but I wouldn't bet on it. You will be going from a 2V 5.4 engine to a 3V 5.4 so you'll have too wait for someone to respond with more knowledge on that swap than I have. Good luck.

I thought 2003 F150's were the last year of the 2v's and all the 2004 F150's were 3v engines...? New body style, new engine, new ignition problems...

Anyway, it would be easiest to stick with a 2v but like Jet said, it's possible.

The 2004 Heritage F150 (old body style) still had the 2V in it I believe. The 3V was put into the new body style.

No, some still use the 2 valve currently.

From: Georgia on my mind...
If it's a truck you're gonna keep for a while and rely on, I'd bite the bullet and get a Motorcraft or Jasper reman long block.

Either comes with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty. If you were just looking to fix it and flip it for some profit, yeah, I might be tempted to find a nice used engine, but if it's something you're gonna keep and drive, I'd consider a reman long block with a warranty.

ETA - I checked with Jasper, depending on which 4.6 it is exactly, you'd be looking at $3200-3300ish list price for a long block. If you were so inclined to do the work yourself, you'd be out $5K or so counting the price of the truck, an engine, misc. parts and bits, and you'd have a rig powered by something better than any used engine you'd find, that's a direct drop in (none of the 3Vs are and would probably involve some significant wiring to make the damn thing work).

That's totally what I'd do if it were mine.

Thought about the idea of the long block, but I'm not sure how long I would have it. It wouldn't be 100% about profit, but I do want something reliable. I see myself as more of an F-250 guy, but right now, the 150 would suite my needs fine.

I found a engine and trans for sale locally out of a wrecked police expedition, 1200, 69K. I know the trans wouldn't work, because it's the 100 series, but should I get it, use the engine, and sell the trans? This is out of a police vehicle, so I'm sure it's been serviced regularly. All fluids look great. The rig was hit from behind, so I know it was a runner before it got smashed.

It's a 2001, the truck I'd be dropping it into is a 99, both 5.4.

That would be a fairly free headache swap right?>

I wouldn't waste the time with a police used engine, unless I was that desperate, that broke and it was given to me. Dynotech explained that one.
