Man I was hoping you found it to be the pulley. Well no two whines are the same, so I will start with the basics and start with the process of elimination. Unfortunately, I have no time to start that this weekend so another week of whining is to come. Keep us posted!

Yeah, i was really hoping it was going to be the pulley too. Yeah, im going to keep looking, but can't really get anything until thursday when i get paid. I just have that feeling its probably going to be the alternator. So like you, gotta deal with the whining noise also for another week.

Well, i just got back from my buddy's garage after replacing the alternator. Good news is that it would have needed replaced soon anyway....bad news is...still didn't fix the problem. Got some new ears in to listen and now possibly thinking the cam shaft bearing. But however, before i go and start replacing more parts, i may just take it to a ford garage and ask them what the problem is. May just pay the big bill now instead of the added up bills of replacement parts to find the problem. If you happen to find out anything new, please let me know.

Well I called and made sure the parts store had an alternator in stock ($199 with $35 core) and also made sure they had a tensioner and idler pulleys just in case. Took off the belt and spun all the pulleys and the only one that acted weird was the tensioner. I took it off and it was definately bad. The parts store said that I could just replace the pulley but the replacement they had was a generic to fit both the 8 groove lightning belt and our standard 6 groove. It was wider and I didnt want to take any chances so I just spent the extra $20 and got the whole tensioner ($50 total). Long story short, got everything put back together and TA - DA, no more freakin whining! So that is the end of my whining story. Hope you find yours without spending like the commercial says, one of these and one of these,,,,an arm and a leg! Let me know how yours turns out and good luck!

BTW - the guys at O'Reilly also swore it was the power steering along with other mechanical people I knew. I have to say once again, the best advice I got was on this site. I really appreciate all the input I have received on here. Thanks again guys!

Well, i may actually check my tensioner one, somehow i must of missed that one. Before i take it to the garage, il have to check that one out. Thankfully though, i replaced my alternator before it took a crap on me, because it was making some bad sounds when i pulled it off.

Well one thing is for sure, there is not much room in that area to work. My son had my breaker bar so I had to use a regular ratchet to relax the belt to pull it off and that about broke my hand along with all the other scratches from the fan shroud, but I aint complaining because that freakin whine is gone. Good luck and let me know what you find out.

Yeah, there definately isn't very much room to work. I plan on replacing it tommorow in the garage, so i guess we'll see how it works. *crosses fingers*

Truck is fixed. After taking the assembly off two or three times, then finding out that the new pulley was up against the block, so a new assembly had to be put on. But great news is that the truck is fixed!

Yeah, i hear you. But just one thing to watch out for because one thing i did realize by replacing the idler pulley was that it was starting to wear out also, so im betting with (at least for me because im just bout to hit 100,000 miles) that the pulleys are starting to wear.

I replaced the idler pulleys - dont forget the second one - this past summer. They checked out fine this last check. I noticed when one of those went out, it was a whole different sound, like a high pitched whine. I am at 118,000 now. Have you done your plugs? I have waited too long and they arent affecting anything at the moment so the tech at the local dealer, who I trust, told me to just let them stay in until they acted up. Strangely, I also looked my belt over real good and it was fine so I didnt replace it either.
