Time-Sert or Helicoil?

Hi all. I have an 01 expedition w/5.4 Triton 115k mi.#4 plug blew out on me (passenger side all the way in back of engine of course)stripping the threads in the head.First time this has happened to me.Upon researching I see that this is a common problem (and a costly one to have repaired). I've decided to give a stab at installing an insert myself but I see that there are a couple of different products out there. We have the Helicoil or the Time-Sert. Due to the location on the engine it seems that the Time-Sert is a better choice after watching videos on line. The Helicoil requires a small amount of striking and I don't have the clearance to do that in the rear of the engine.Do I need to remove the cylinder head to do this? Has anybody had any experience with both products? Also are there any good how to videos that anybody can recommend?

Theres lots of information here about the blow out issue. Time sert is the best repair, board member Galaxy rents the tools. Try using the search feature.

The helicoil has a tendancy to come out again. Time-sert does not.

I had a feeling from watching the videos that Time-Sert was the better product.Any idea what it costs to rent the tools? And can this be done without removing the head?

I have no idea of the cost. Since you have not been a member long enough to use PMs, you will need to email him to get in contact. Click on this link to one of his posts, then click on his name. You will see there, the option to email him. Good luck.

Click the last link in my signature ('99 CV) and read the captions in the Spark Plug album. That website has been running slowly, so it may take a few tries.
