5.4 Timing

I was turning my crank to TDC when the crank pully bolt snapped off in the crankshaft. So I continued to tare it down without TDC but i am completely re-doing the motor. i have it down to the bare block and the bare heads. my question is when i am puting it all back together how do i go about finding TDC for the pistons and the heads.

what year? most chains will have links that are darker in color and you line them up with dots on the cam and crank. If you tell me the year i can send a pic.

ok each chain will have 3 links a different color then the others(either black or copper)2 will be side by side and one on its own. here is how to set the cam timing.

id look into ford racing cams myself im not to familiar with aftermarket cams on these trucks, but from what ive heard you dont gain to much from them..... look into Manley for connecting rods and pistons.

I get the timing part if i were doing a head gasket or something and it was already together, but i'm startin from just a bare block, new crank rods pistons bearings, bare heads new cam valves. How can i find TDC for the valves with a new cam and the head off the block? Or do i basically have to mock everything up to find the timing? Is that where the "safe mode" comes in? For the block when it's together i just put the # 1 piston to the top of the deck? Would the be considered TDC? Sorry for the inconvience i just want to get it all right the first time. thanks

when both the exhaust and intake lobe are on the base circle that will be around TDC, if thats what your asking. But why do you need to know this before assembly? Just line the marks up when you go together and it will be timed.
