99-03 5.4 2v's are a direct swap with no modifications needed.

it will go right in, you wont have the pi heads so you'll have less hp and torque, but all in all it will go in. the only difference i can think of off the top of my head is that the non pi 5.4 had a coolant temp sensor for the pcm and a coolant temp sender for the gauge, your pi 5.4 has a cylinder head temp sensor for both the pcm and gauge i think. if you did it you could just simply leave the sender in the intake manifold to plug the hole and as far as the ect goes, you may want to hear what someone else has to say, but you may be able to simply use the ect instead, or you could put your pi heads and intake if they're still good on the non pi block and make it a direct swap

I just did a 99-03 swap. You have to change the intake all the pulleys (had to use a spacer washer on the idler pulley) and the oil filter bypass had to be installed on the newer engine.
I dont see why one would want an older engine and the pi heads issue.

Well I came across a 99 with a rod knock and it only has 89 k and dont want to spend the time or money to fix it, so Ive found several 97 engines with 80 90 k on them for 500 - 750 and so far no 99-03's except at a bone yard which they want 1200-1500 for a 140-179 k engines which is a rip off. and if a 97 will fit ( with out spending all my big saveings on gaskets and agen time) then Im thinking thats the way to go???

if all you want is the truck to run and drive then yes it will work fine, i just have no clue how different the temp readings should be for the ect vs. the cht

lol run, run good, and no ses light. Im shure my heads are still good and I allways take the intake off to get them out. and im shure the timing chain cover will be diffrent, so the heads would only take a min to swap out on the ground. Ill have to price 2 head gaskets. So if I swap the cyl heads, intake, t-chain cover, then It will fall right in?? the blocks are the same? ( I did a 4.6 swap in a car and the starter was diff there for the blick was diff that was a big mistake now a take a ext min to check just dint wana be out 700 bucks)

the blocks are the same, i'm pretty sure timing covers are the same but you can take them off and compare. the pistons are a little different i hear people on hear saying that the pi heads on the npi block will raise the compression a tad bit. and everywhere i've looked is showing different part#s for the 97 starter. i'm not totally sure whats different between the starters so you may want to see what someone else has to say about it.
