Intermittent rough/smooth idle

I havent owned my 05 F150 for very long so I am still working out its bugs, but it had what I would call a rough idle compared to what I was used to with my ranger. I cleaned the maf sensor and noticed an improvement, but its strange because I will stop at the lights and it will runs completely smooth, next light, a little rough... etc. Its seems hit and miss, but noticed its a little more rough when its in park or neutral as opposed to in gear with a foot on the brake. To add to this, I dont know if its technically what I would call a "rough" idle, it almost seems to very mildly shake with a rhythm. Spark plug cutting out? I know its time to change them, but I am waiting for a hand from a ford tech buddy with proper tools incase they snap off. Would a bad plug be a possibility though?

I have the same problem with mine. Sometimes is smooth as silk, others it almost dies. I've searched over this forum alot on this subject and it seems alot of others have the same problems with no solutions.

Wasn't it the '05's that also had problems with the injectors? I believe there is an extended warranty offered by Ford because of the issues with the injectors. You might want to check that out. Also make sure your fuel filter gets changed every 15k miles.

If you cleaned the MAF and noticed improvement, try cleaning the throttle body. Its an easy problem solver. My 06 did the same thing. Pulled the throttle body it had a bunch of black carbon build up.

Same problems here, had lots of work done on 2001 F150 last year. Now repeating same spurting, skipping, when idle. Told by two seniors that normal for F150, just put rubbing acohol in gas and should clean out problem.

Anyone ever heard of this?

Nope, because 70% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol contains 30% water. If you are going to put alcohol in the gas, use commercially available gas line antifreeze (Iso-Heet).

My 08 with 11k does the same thing. Sounds like it's running on 7 cylinders. I park it, and then it runs fine next time.

Don't waste your money on new rear O2 sensors - all those do are monitor catalyst efficiency and do not affect the way it runs in the least bit.
