puting with white smoke

alright one night im sitting with the truuck in park for about an hour. long conversation. when i pulled off i noticed a lot of power loss and puting. very bad. so i pulled off side of road and checked oil. barely any. so i added some. kept happening. eventually got it home. so"
when i give it gas there is white smoke.
when i give it gas while in gear it puts and loss of power.
hard to reach over 55 or 60 mph.

changed oil in a style to remove gunk or harm.
changed trany fluid same thing.
there is oil all of bottom parts of truck and there is always a hint of a sweet smell around the vvehicle when running.

i have a cat conv and a glasspack for exhaust all done myself. there is water in it at times but i only see it around start up. and blew it all out from what i saw. i had it straight piped for a long time then put on glasspack after problems. so

completely lost now. i got it to possible blown head gasket or crankshaft seal. dont know how to check or fix them. i do all work myself. but like to ask mechanics before i do anything!

need help fast!

What truck? What engine? From the sound of it you need a engine..

rebuild huh. what do you all think it is.

ford f 150 xlt, the engine is a v8 5.4l triton. the sweet smell went away now. dumb girlfriend admitted she dumped the trany fluid. lol which is why i kept checkin the trany fluid. but after all the oil change it is runnin better. someone mentioned antifreeze. what you mean?

White smoke in the exhaust is proof of water entering the combustion process. That means a crack or a bad gaasket. with your truck being a 97 that would mean you likely need an engine.

alright well i think most likely from what i see its a gasket. i have a 2003 not a 97 dont think that matters much since they are so close alike. now i have to get this replaced and hope that was it. if not who knows. now last question. rough estimate. cost of repair to have head gasket replaced on both sides. anyone have to go through this yet?

thanks guys

a guy i know took in a 1998 buick, front wheel drive v6 3.1 or 3.8 or something like that, and it costed him 700. it will probably be more on your truck because of the SOHC
