Question Smooth idle, rough on accel

Maybe I didn't search correctly, but I didn't find anything about my issue. My 01, 4.6, 127k miles screw idles smooth as glass, but on accel runs rough as if plugs were fowling out. No CEL. Another strange thing is, the rough accel doesn't always happen. Sometimes my screw runs perfect. When it does run rough on accel, a hard accel sometimes clears it out and it runs ok, but not always. I put some Sea Foam in the tank 2 days ago to hopefully clean up whatever it is that's causing the prob.

I pull a 24' cargo trailer for my daughter's high school band and when the screw is banging out, I just don't have the power... (obviously).
I don't want to just randomly start replacing parts, so.... Anyone have an idea?

No. I have not changed the plugs yet. I was trying to get a feel for things as in getting a plan A, B, C sort of. In other words, if replacing the plugs didn't work, then Plan B. What I did not say in my original post was I pulled and cleaned the TB/EGR ports due to a p401 code. That's all done and works fine. No CEL.

Thanks for the links,
however upon clicking on them I get a BIG FAT -----> Access denied!
BUT.... no problem... just a little elementary hackin' and i got the pic.

Thanks man. I think I will undertake the fuel filter replacement first, as this seems the most logical cause of the erratic performance. Do I need any special clips or tools to remove the filter?

yes 5/16th" fuel filter disconnect tool, (i think 5/16th) i know throught the years of these trucks ford changed them up, so i cant really tell you on a 2001 exactly, some have 1 plastic clip towards the fuel tank and the special fitting, some like my 2002 and my daddys 2003 fx4 have both special fittings, either way its not hard AT ALL, you can depressurize the fuel line on the fuel rail on the passenger side

To me, 127k on the original plugs is the FIRST issue I'd take care of........

If the fuel filter has been on for over 30k, do change it.

The plugs were changed last year (I think it was last year). At any rate, they are currently not the oem plugs. That's why I'm going to go with the filter first. The filter was changed also, but that was approx 2 1/2 years ago. So... ya... it's time for the filter. Thanks for your advice. I'll keep everyone updated.
