How to clean your engine?

I was wanting to get some Gunk Engine Brite and spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes and hose it off. I have read on here that a lot don't recommend hosing your engine off as it can mess up the COPs. Is this true? Can I just spray WD40 which repels water on and around the COPs and then do my engine cleaning? My engine is very dirty/dusty where the previous owner lived out in the country. I wanted to clean it up a bit---DirtySCREW

There are quite a few threads in the Care and Detailing section that address this - you will have to use the search function because they go back quite a ways.

Yes, engines with COP on top can be a pain to clean without zapping the COP's. Don't use Gunk, I think the safest stuff to use is Simple Green - and MIST the water, don't spray it. It will take some manual scrubbing and wiping.

You have to be careful not to use a high pressure spray near the cops! I have never had a problem washing my engine in 3 years, however I use low pressure with simple soap & water staying away from the cops! I also use a leaf blower after washing & blow away any remaining water out in the engine compartment! Use common sense & you will be fine.

everyone has their owne method to this madness. I personally use a product called awesome that you get at the dollar store for about 3 dollars a gallon. and this stuff really lives up to its name. apply heavly with spray bottle, let sit for about 10 min, reaply again. then hose her down being carefull not to soak the packs! I really never seem to have a problem just using general common sens when doing so. mine is a 5.4 carelessness and not paying attenchen it what gets you in a pickle. just take your time, have a few beers and you'll do fine!!

I spray mine down with simple green with the foamer tip on the end and use a small handled kitchen brush and scrub the areas needing a bit more attention. Then I hose it down with a garden hose using not quite a mist setting but not a soaking setting either, sort of in the middle and then when all done I run the engine for about 15 minutes or just drive it around. I just did mine about an hour ago, been doing it this way since I bought the truck new in 05' and no problems yet, do it about every other month.

check out the post I made yesterday titled "Dyno Run results" in the supercharger turbocharger section. I was just on the dyno...best pull was at 404/452, but still have some work to do on it.
