Yes - So that's what it is? Yea, never new it's purpose and I know they fall apart with time, -mine hasn't yet.

I wouldn't think it's a necessity then. - Specially if no one has noticed anything different running without it.

Still looks good, snaps in front, I think the snaps did indeed break on this one at one time. I believe I did something different up their to keep it together -
