Dealership Oil Change Rant...

Okay, this is gonna sound pretty stupid.. but what does synthetic motor oil or more specifically synthetic blend (Motorcraft 5-20) look like? To be honest, I've never really messed with the stuff as I always leave it up to the dealer to do most of the routine maintenance.. I generally make sure to check all my fluid levels and make sure they actually changed the oil filter and etc.. but I figured there's not much stopping some places from throwing cheap dino oil into the truck if someone couldn't tell the difference?

anywho.. After the last oil change, I've lost faith in my dealership.. I specifically asked for Synthetic Blend and the invoice said 5w-20 bulk oil, regular oil, and they only filled it up with 6 quarts at that.. I checked the level right there, and sure enough it was about a quart low.. so the service adviser took the truck back there and I walked into the shop to see what the deal was.. Apparently the guy who changed my oil couldn't tell the difference between a 4.6 and a 5.4.. (makes ya wonder how many other times the idiot screwed up)

by this point.. I was pretty ticked off.. as I was walking back to the service advisors office, I straight up told him, I'm not paying for this ****.. and he looked at me like I was stupid.. nonetheless he voided the payment..

Mind you.. I'm fairly good natured and wouldn't mind the mistake as long as it gets fixed and being that I caught it soon enough.. but this wasn't the first time this happened.. So I went over to the Service Managers office and had a little talk with him.. long story short, the guy who worked on my truck aparently got chewed out over the phone pretty hardcore and my next oil change will be free..

Now I realize 1 quart may not really be that big of a deal.. but this is the second time it happened at this dealership.. and some would say I should do it myself.. but I work 40+ hours a week and go to school full-time.. but I think from now on, I'll just have to make time for it.. lol

You would figure that the idiot in the quick lube shop changes oil enough that he would be able to tell the difference by now, considering that's all they do..

well full synthetic and i guess some syn blends can be hard to see on the dipstick if that helps. the first time i changed my oil with motorcraft syn blend my cel came on and i ran to autozone and well i rechecked the level while i was waiting on the guy to come out with a code reader and i started freaking out because i couldnt see anything on the dipstick. but then i looked harder and it was just really hard to see, it was full. i dont like other people working on my truck because i've had bad experiences as well(such as people not thinking you have to adjust rear brake shoes when they have automatic adjusters-didnt turn out the best in my favor but its all good). at least you didnt have to pay for your oil change. and at least the guy put some oil in it or you wouldnt have been driving away in your truck at all. i cant blame you one bit- 1 quart can make the difference between the engine knocking or running smooth within 3000(or more) miles.

If you have to time take it to the dealer you have time to do it yourself. Seriously, 20 min max! Walmart oil and filter. And most firestations and parts places will take the old oil.

Still no excuse for the tech being a complete idiot.

Bulk 5W20 usually is the synthetic blend. It costs too much to buy by the case for use in the shop compared to buying hundreds of gallons in bulk at a time.

maybe at your shop, Bulk 5w20 might be synthetic blend.. but the oil put in the first time around was definately not synthetic from the looks of it.. I checked the stick both times, and they were different as well... atleast now I can distinguish between the two

I went ahead and scanned both of the invoices and pasted the synthetic blend oil change code text into the regular oil change.. it's at the bottom circled in blue.. notice the difference? btw.. I wonder why they would decide to set my tire pressure at 50 psi? lol..

As written on the invoice, you received a blend. The QSP is the key to understanding what they put in it. The oil is made by SOPUS or in terms you might understand, it is a Shell oil product.

hmm.. maybe I should hate posted it differently.. look at the twice "seperate" invoices one was clearly a regular oil change with only 6 qts, while the second was a synthetic blend with 7 qts.. I simply pasted and merged the text from the synthetic oil change for the sake of simplicity (it was circled in blue) anywho.. look again

I've noticed on the tire pressure most of the guys are not smart enough to know that there is a set pressure for the vehicle. They check the max psi on the tire and that's what they put in it instead of looking on the door to see what is the setting for that vehicle.

The door tag pressure is for the tires that came STOCK. Most F-150 owners change to a LT type tire first time they need changed and LT tire depending on there load rating and expected use hold much more air then the stock ones. My problem is the exact opposite. The never put the recommended low pressure for the tires I have on the truck. the door tag is irrelevant.

Dude you can't visually tell by looking at the oil if they put in dino or synthetic. And I'm too lazy to look up the part number on your invoice, but I'm pretty sure it's synthetic blend ordered in bulk (55 gallon drums).

I could really rag on you, but I won't.
