Well time for another change and im going to do this one myself so I bough 6 quarts of max life again, but what the shop put in was 5w20, I bough 10w30 still max life however. Should have got 5w30 but it is summer so the 10w probably wont hurt.

Do yourself a favor, go get the 5W.

I just bought 6 quarts of 5w 30, Mobile 1. Just curious if a fully synthetic will create any problems with an 02 5.4 with 154,000 miles. Sorry man. Not trying to hi-jack your thread.

A lot of guys have changed to Mobil 1 without any problems of leaking. I did on my 351W that is 28 years old and 140K miles on the engine and she did not leak one drop. You can get more expensive synthetic oils such as Royal Purple and Amsoil, but oil tests have proven them to be only slightly better than Mobil 1, and you can buy Mobil 1 at WalMart. The filter is another important component. Take that Fram off and throw it as far as you can and get yourself a Wix or a Motorcraft filter.
As far as viscosity of the oil, you are better off using the one that Ford recommends. However, kicking up from 5W to 10W won't cause any damage. The engine just won't run as efficiently. Try to stay with the recommended viscosity.

97 F150 4.6L 190,000. I use Mobil 1 5W30 standard flavor- not high mileage
I user less than 1/2 qt. between changes at 4000 miles- engine is bone dry.

You are wasting money if you change the Mobil 1 after only 4k miles. Drive it 4K, change the filter, then drive it 4K more. Been doing it for years without a problem. I did an extensive research re: synthetic oils a few years back, and you will find that those in the know do the same thing.

Mobile 1 ain't synthetic any more no matter what the label says. It's a Group III dino oil.

Yer good to go. The 10w only comes into play on cold start up and considering it's summer, there really aren't any cold start ups unless you live REAL far north. But otherwise, it's a decent choice. I don't have all of the particulars on the 10w-30 but the 5w-30 comes in at 100C @ 9.8 in viscosity which means it's borderline on being an Energy Conserving oil. You might look on the bottles to see if it has the EC labeling. If not, you might expect a little fall in fuel mileage but frankly, one or two runs thru the gears will effect fuel mileage more than the small differences in the oils of EC or not. We have seen where engine life can extended by moving up to the 5w-30 oils once the engine sees about 90,000 miles. Again, the viscosity differences are small when comparing most 5w-20 oils which are on the thick end of the scale versus the 5w-30 oil that are on the thin end of the scale. I've switched my 04 SCrew over to the 5w-30 EC oils and there is zero difference in the fuel mileage so far at 4000 miles on this particular change. I'll be sampling at 5000 miles but expect to run it like always to 7500 miles before changing. My wear metals are almost always single digit in analysis. But come winter, make sure to use a 5w oil. The Triton engines need oil fast at the cams and that's why the spec calls for a 5w oil for cold start up.

If you'll search this forum, you'll find that Mobil One 5w-30 has been failing the Sequence IVA testing and all of the competing brands have been challenging Mobil to testing in a public forum. Mobil has remained silent on the issue. If you haven't put it in the engine yet, I'd take it back and get the EP version if you are a Mobil fan. Mobil One has never turned in any stellar performance reports. If you are paying a premium for any product, you should get premium results. Mobil One does not deliver and most quality dino brands will beat it in analysis reports over many, many miles. Your money, yer truck.
