The worst thing about those Bosch plugs is that they fall apart inside the cylinders -

man did i get lucky! the coolant leak (that started this thread before it turned into bosch plugs again!) ended up being the coolant temp sensor housing in FRONT of the throttle body. where adult sized hands and tools can reach it. it was filling up the valley between the heads and didn't present itself until i pulled up a grade into the garage, dumping a gallon of coolant down the back of the block.(which was claned up according to EPA regulations of course!) why does old coolant smell like rancid fish anyway? that housing that looks like a one armed cactus was really corroded and got pulled a little too agressively when i was getting the #4 coil in. but i'm still not ruling out tumba's magic eraser.

My problem turned out to be, when I was erasing the dirty film off the coil, I was pushing against the intake tube, and pushed it off the throttle body and the back of the DPFE. Now see why your the smart one. I did't even notice it when I took the IAC off. When I put the IAC back on. It still wouldn't run. But I had to leave for work then. I spent all my free time that day trying to figure out where my problem was, and started that thread. When I got home that evening is when I found the problem. But I'm studied up on the EGR system again.
btw Thanks again jbrew.

Yea , that's' strange. Those Codes are easiest to fix IMO and experience,- that's with this truck anyway. Dang.., it's been a long time since I've seen a CEL in the 98. I haven't looked to see if it comes on in the "Run" position.

I better check the bulb, - then scan it real quick lol.

Hey, I can't remember , did you get her fixed,-100% ?

The brakes seemed to have fixed themselves.
I did replace the booster and master. But still had the bleed down problem. I worked around the 4Wabs quite a bit. But the best thing, I can say I did was give it a good whack. Might of loosened something up. I'm at a total loss on it, but brakes work right now.
But the 401 has been a thorn in my side FOREVER. That is why I was asking jethat about his 4.6 in the 401 thread.
I also have a thread in the electrical forum on the 98 model.
I have a thread in a GM Forum, and also one in a Dodge Forum. I'm ready to go postal

So I take it you went thru the throttle body elbow. - You had the elbow itself removed and on the bench right? - Fished EVERY hole with Automotive pipe cleaners ? Reamed the snot out of them right?

The 5fours won't plug solid, but the 4six's will crap up a port, -SOLID. The EGR systems on the 4six is s a little different - everything is smaller, ports are sortuh goofy.

What looks like a spec of of dirt, -could be a port plugged up tight. -

So what happened when you suck tested the valve itself ? PO402 is set specific for the poppet valve failure.

PO401 also points to as possible poppet valve issue -

That said, a 401 and 402 still could either be a plugged port or that damn DPFE sensor. And of course a vac leak. Source vac leaks are usually always over by the battery. - Between the Battery and Firewall. if any of the lines are leaking over there by the trunk line/ emission harness connector, you'll loose a little or allot , - maybe just enough source vac to render your EVR /EGR useless. Check those if you haven't already. -

Your EVR is plugged in correctly right? White to source/ Green to Valve?

One more thing. Those rubber elbows on your emissions harness. The elbows that 90 specifically, these -

See the little flair-out deal ^^^^ , - in the plastic line there ? You can't push the 90 degree boots any further than I have in the pic above. If you do, the plastic line will be to close to the turn and reduce vac significantly. If the vac line is against the wall, you won't get nothing at all. - So just uo to the flair, no further.

Yes I've done those several times, I just have let it go for a fews months this time. Been having so many other problems. But I always hook my hand pump up to the vacuun lines and make sure they have clear passage and hold vacuum. But this code just will not stay gone. The throttle body is planned to come off again today for a cleaning, and I was thinking about maybe drilling the smaller port, based on what jathat said. It is the one that will be plugged this time, because I've let it go so long. But I'm not going to just drill it, because I don't have a spare one just laying around. Ya know what I mean.
