Rusty Fuel Rails???

Does anyone know if it is possible for the fuel rails to rust internally. I have already had to replace a rusty tank, installed new pump, filter, injectors. I have cleaned TB, MA sensor, egr. Changed coils, plugs, pcv tube and i still get lean bank and multiple misfire codes. Pull the injectors and there is what appears to be rust on the inlet. Clean them out and it runs fine for about three or four tanks of gas. It appears that the fuel line is stainless except for the fuel rail. Has anyone seen this before. The lean bank is usually 1-4 and thats the side i clean. Also changed the O2 sensor on that side. I suspect bad fuel rail? Help Please?

what are the exact codes? do you clean just the very ends of the rail where the injectors connect to it? or the whole side? and how do you clean it? and just to makes sure you did the right side. cylinders 1-4 are bank 1 on the passenger side. i only say that because someone on here ended up replacing the wrong parts due to not knowing this, so i'm just making sure.
to answer your question, yes a rusty fuel rail can cause those issues.

don't remember

Usually, it is a 1131 first, followed multiple misfire and then both time it was cylinder 1 misfires after a while. will have to check them again. butt when i pull the injectors, i just turn them upside down and rust taps out of them.

then that rust is your problem. how olds the fuel filter? is the tank clean? what brand and octane gas do you use? i'd have the fuel rail completely cleaned if it is the problem. you can actually have the dealer do there injector service or whatever its called. i'm pretty sure it cleans the fuel rail at the same time. that or you can run a bottle of fuel system cleaner. techron works good. and theres another one but i forget the name.

won't the rust keep coming back? how will it get through the inlet injector screen? the tank, fuel pump have been changed. the fuel filter twice. i am confident in the tank, i changed it myself. the truck sat up for 2 yrs and the tank rusted. could the rail rust also?

It appears the fuel lines are stainless, but the rail is steel that is chromed.

all that sitting with old gas in it probably killed the rail. thats what happened to my old front tank(sat for almost a year before i bought it). and you may want to check the fuel lines while your at it. stainless steel can still rust, just not that easily.

P0133 Heated O2 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1, Sensor 1)

P1131 Lack Of HO2S11 Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean

_______________________________________

Passenger Side = Bank 1

P0133 Slow Response, Sensor, Bank 1

These tend to show that the HO2S sensors may be failing, and may often be associated with the Lack of Switch DTCs P0131/0132 and P0151/0152. Confusingly, this DTC can be shown as HO2S Circuit Slow Response - but the test refers to the sensor, not the circuit.
____________________________________________

P1131 - Lack of Switching - Sensor Indicates Lean, Bank 1

The Front sensors are tested continuously for switching during Closed Loop operation provided the Conditions are met. Excessive time between switches, or no switches, indicates a malfunction. Since the lack of switching could be caused by fuel trim shifts as well as a sensor malfunction a stored DTC indicates whether the sensor was always indicating lean or rich when it stopped and if the Fuel Trim was at max.

Where Lack of Switch DTCs are recorded the LT Fuel Trims should be watched closely - if these show well into the negative or positive at idle they could be caused by an air inlet leak or a faulty Fuel Pressure Regulator - meaning that the fuelling has not changed rather than the HO2S not detecting it.

________________________________________

Your DTC's point directly to HO2 Sensor Fault. If you replaced the passenger side, -swap it with the drivers side and re-boot to see if the problem moves to the drivers side(Bank 2). It's good practice to replace BOTH forward sensors at the same time for system integrity. I would swap it before throwing parts at it. - Swap banks on the injectors as well, if you have to. I'm thinking it's the O2 sensor tho personally - new or not, doesn't matter.

Good Luck.

Well Brew, when this occurs the truck does skip and miss alot. I take the injectors out and clean the inlet and it of them and it runs fine. I actually pulled them off this a.m. I stuck my small screw driver in the rail to retrieve the o ring for one and it came out with rust all on it. Ford can't get the fuel rail anymore. Really at a stand still. Dont know where to look, afraid that a used one will be the same.

changed out fuel rails, same codes and miss. wonder if the injectors are bad. doesn't give a misfire code, but definitely missing.

Did you not read my post? It's for your benefit. Sounds like you totally ignored it. Oh well, I tried.

Could be the injectors ,coils, plugs AND an O2 problem. Regardless of why it's missing, you have an O2 problem.

1. I have to wonder how much rust and crap is in the rest of the fuel system. You may have to drop the tank and flush it all out.

2. Like Brew says, you have O2 codes, you need new front sensors.

The injector filter is right on top, you CAN service these. Here's a GREAT write up -
