4.6 to 5.4 swap engine...should i buy this 5.4?

I have been looking for a 5.4 to replace my 4.6 for a while now and cant really find any locally that are under $1500. Today I found a 02 5.4 out of an expedition that was removed because it had a knock when accelerating. the guy thought it may have a cracked piston, but was not sure. He was asking 500 but i talked him into 300 since he just wants to sell it. I looked online and found sets of pistons for around 150. Should I go ahead and get this engine and give it a once over? I dont want to spend 1500 on another used engine, nor can i buy a short block. please give me some input.

Thanks All

I wouldnt touch it unless you planned to completely rebuild it.

take it for $300, you can turn it into a solid motor, depending on shop rates, perhaps under $2000. i paid $1000 for machine work and spend 1400 on forged bottom end, whole thing even crank.

$300 and it probably has a forged crank

either way $300 for a good base to start with is a decent price

If you have $300.00 to risk buy the engine, pull it apart and inspect it. It will cost you to rebuild it. If you just want a 5.4 to swap and don`t plan on too many upgrades try http://car-part.com/.
