Some times the tensioner goes bad and the chain slaps. In some cases it wears a hole in the front cover. Replacing the tensioner will involve removing the front cover. Strangely enough the VCT valve body assembly has an internal filter and a passageway that feeds oil to the tensioner. If it is clogged you may not get enough oil pressure to the tensioner. I would check that first before removing the front cover.

Actually I noticed this has become a problem on these trucks..maninly the '04's. Mine is really bad. Be sure it is the timing chain. They are usually more pronounced at slower speeds then at idle. Use the search feature and you will find some topics about this. There has been alot of threads about this problem here latley.

All I know is that it is a whale of a job. Took mine to 2 different dealerships both said I was lookin at way over $2000. They said it is very labor intensive.........12 to 16 hour job. Right now, I'm still trying to find a good (and cheap) independent mechanic, cas I just cant afford 2 grand. What I dont understand about mine is it only starts when the engine is been ran at normal temps.
