MPG on a 5.4

I have a 07 SuperCrew Lariat 2-wheel drive (not 4x4). I'm in LA so there is a lot of traffic on the freeways, so I'm averaging about 13.5 mpg. Is that normal? When I first start-it in the morning, and back-out of the driveway, its a little slugish. I've taken it to the dealer, and they say that it is normal. What do you think? My last truck was a 97 XLT with a 4.6, and it felt like it had more power.

This is the first truck that I have ever loved, so I tend to baby her. I've had it for almost 2-years and I'm about to hit 10k miles. I want lift the truck about 3" and add some meats. What do you guys recommend?

fuel mileage- depends on your driving habits, and how many miles each way, city, highway etc. seems pretty normal though.

as far as it feeling sluggish- the 97 had a throttle cable. your 07 has a drive by wire system. they dont respond near as fast IMO. at least i've never felt one respond faster than a actual cable. yours has sensors and an electric motor that moves the throttle plate.

If you truck has the digial message center, when you are on the hwy showing mpg click the reset button and it should reset your mpg. I do this once im up to speed crusing on hwy and it goes up to anyway from 18-21 mpg, then drops as i go into city driving stop and go. I do this so i dont have to wait i like real time. I know my 08 and most if not all have the issue were it feels like a delay when you step on peddle , throtle responce, since cold air intake , much much better responce, i step down and it goes, no delay.

California gas is crap low energy gas with ethanol - mileage and power isn't gonna be great with that stuff anyway.

I'm not talking about the response. What I'm talking about is, that when I first turn it on for the first time (in the morning), then I hit the gas, there is a sputter like feeling. I once punch it, and the truck sputtered, and then after about two seconds it started to go. I took it to the dealer, and the service writer told me that it is normal, and that I shouldn't worry about it.

What do you recommend I do to get the power out of it? Should I add Cold Air intake, Throttle body kit?

for the morning starts it is running rich until it goes into closed loop. thats most likely what your problem is. do you wait for the engine to at least idle down before you put it in gear? my truck sputters just a little bit if i put it in gear as soon as i start it on a cold morning.

if you add a cold air intake you will want a custom tuner too. that way it actually does give you increases without the possibility of running lean. and a good exhaust system will help out with the intake. mufflers with a straight through design are the only ones that will give you gains. magnaflow, borla, roush, corsa, bassani just to name a few.

I will say I notice when I start mine in the AM, and pull out of the garage, the choke shuts off ( just using the brake to pull out ), and the truck runs like crap.

I actually shut it off, and restart it, to reset the choke. My '01 I could get away with this, the choke would stay on pulling out ( as long as I did not touch the throttle ).

Maybe try starting it, and letting the engine sit until the RPMs drop, and see if it is the same ??

BTW : 14.4 per the info center mixed city and highway driving in Chicago. Right now I have about 500# of sand in the back for traction ( still calling for snow this weekend ), along with the pork chop box full of tools.

When I start it in the morning, I wait about 30 seconds for everything to settle, then i put it in gear. So I guess everything is normal, just wanted to get feedback.

Wow. I'm getting 20+ highway on my 09 5.4 2wd. I did not think 4x4 took that big of a hit.

how fast you drivin? and where?

my little 5.0 4x4 auto gets me 23mpg on the highway doing the speed limit and accelerating pretty hard. around 12 when i do 80mph. 9mpg @ 80mph in the mountains. so your either driving really fast or in the moutains pretty fast. slow it down a bit and i bet you'll get at least 14mpg if not more

What are you using for gas, keith? That sounds like E85 mileage. Do you have a 6 speed and are you using full overdrive?
