True, the new 3V 5.4 does have unusually loud injectors, but they also have noisey cam phasers that knock at idle(when hot). If you rev the engine past 2000 rpm and the noise goes away, but comes back at idle, it is the phaser. Usually louder on one side. A stethescope on the very front of the valve cover will confirm.

thanks for advice

sounds like the exact problem i am having .i have never heard of that before, how do i confirm if that is it for sure? i was able to use a ratchet extension when i thought it was a lifter and the sound seems to be mainly on the passenger side.it has not effected perfomance, but i was worried it would. is that an easy fix or should i just live with it? thanks again.

Easy is as easy does. It most often times is the pass side phaser. I have replaced more of those than the drivers side. I can replace the pass side in under an hour and a half, but I have done more than a dozen. If you can live with it, then do so, it won't hurt performance, just resale value.

Parts about $250-300, and depending on which side, anything from 3 to 6hours of labor.
