Question Sounds like the lifters are going to fly out of it

I have a 05 f150, 5.4 with 52000 miles. No problems with it, until a few days ago. Started it up, got about 1/2 mile down the road, heard some clicking noise that soon became extreme. It sounded like the lifters were going to fly out of it. I shut it down at once. Checked the oil it was fine. When my mechanic got there,15 minutes later, started up and was fine. He did not know what would have caused it. I drove it the rest of the morning, everything was fine. It set for about three hours and it did the same thing. I shut it off for a minute or so, restarted it, and it was fine. I started and stopped turning it off and restarting several times but not letting it get cold and no problems. If you let it set and get cold it does it every time you start it up, shut it off for about 30 seconds to a minute and it is fine. You can start and stop as much as you want and not let the engine get completely cold and it will not do it. What do you think?

what oil grade do you use and synthetic or regular? and brand oil filter? and how often is it changed? does the gauge show oil pressure? is it overheating?

I'm not sure what kind of oil. I have it changed at the dealership, and I can see they use a motorcraft filter. I have it changed about every 3800 to 4200 miles. Suggested oil change is at 5000 mile intervals, according to the book and my dealership.

The gauge is just a bit above dead center, it has been there ever since it was brand new and it is not over heating.

The gauge is not a pressure gauge, it's electronic and it is either on or off, so it tells you nothing other than you have some oil pressure. Have you checked the oil? Is it running smoothly other than the noise?

Dealerships tend to use Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic 5W20. Or least the dealerships in my area do.

I wouldn't assume that its the engine itself. Let it sit overnight. Remove the serpentine belt and then start it up. Sometimes a bad FEAD component such as the alternator. A/C, P/S, belt tensioner, pulley.etc. can do this. I've seen some of these make a noise on cold startup and go away when warm and some just the reverse. A bad bearing (or spring on the tensioner) in any of these may cause a loud rattle that can come and go. Just something to think about.

There was a recent OASIS broadcast about aftermarket oil filters for the modular engines breaking down & blocking the oil journals. Take it back to the dealership where the oil was last changed & make them diagnose what they did to your engine. Have you EVER seen a non-MotorCraft filter on your engine?

Read all the way to the bottom... "MMO" isn't an 'acronym'.

An acronym is an abbreviation that can be pronounced as a word, like:
**** (National Sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiters Partei)
SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus)
LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)
SONAR (Sound Navigation & Ranging)
MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital)
WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant)
GIGO (Garbage-In; Garbage-Out)
WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)

Damn, Just a simple abbreviation then.. Ahh, I never did like those English classes. Probably why I'm still being schooled every now and again
