Whistle Coming from Engine ?

Hey guys,

I have a 2005 F150 FX4 that has a 5.4L V8. Truck has about 45,000 miles on it.

At about 64 mph and exactly 75mph I get a whistle that comes out of the engine compartment.

There are other spots where it will do this but I've confirmed those mph's by dropping below those and returning to them and each time there is a audible whistling.

Any idea what this could be?

Thanks

Tom

does it change with rpm or mph? probably a idler or tensioner pulley. theres a tsb on it somewhere.

It changes somewhat. Meaning only around a specific miles per hour. Otherwise it's either making the noise or its not at all. Does this sound like an idler or tensioner pulley like you stated?

Any idea if TSB are done on vehicles that are no longer under warranty? Meaning are they done for free by the dealership.

Thanks

Tom

since it changes by mph instead of rpm then i'd think its something in the driveline. you can usually hear the idler or tensioner pullies at any rpm, alot of it is noticed on cold morning starts.

My 1999 F150 has a whistle noise when over 60mph and differs with the mph also.
People that have looked at it/heard it have told me it is the rear-end.

I doubt it is a pully if it is not like that at idle, I have had pully problems too and when they have been bad on my truck, the noise from them is constant.

My 97 had it. Found a bad vac line behind the battery. It looked like a brown stain but it was a pin hole. I figured it got some battery acid on it at some time.

No I don't have any after market parts on my truck other than a bed cover.

Come to think of it I do have a rear axle seal leak (minor leak) from a caliper failure. I think the heat from the caliper failure caused the seal to leak.

Any other thoughts.

i own a 2004 fx4 (love it) and i have that same whistle at 63-65 and 73 to 75mph. I thought it was coming through my radio like a bad am station but even with the radio off it does it. So i went to a ford dealer and they said it is the wind blowing though the altenater, but only when its below like 20 degrees. I will be looking into building as shield around my altenator this summer and see if it helps. But i feel your pain!!

Whistle under the hood

2006 F150 XLT 4.6 auto
I live in Ontario and I am having the same cold weather experience with this tiresome whistle comiing from under the hood. My 2000 did it too. The 2000 was a standard and I took it "everywhere" to resolve the problem. I was told everything from wind past the mirrors to wheel bearings to throw-out bearings. The truck never had a mechanical problem in 300,000 miles. Obviously not a bearing!!

The 06 whistles just tlike the other one, only when it's cold. I figure wind passes over the mirrors in warm weather just as it does oin winter, the wheels continue to go around and there is no throw-out bearing. Somebody at Ford or wherever must have figured this thing out. I continue to ask and if I find anything out that sounds realistic I'll report back.

Mean time: whistling in the snow.

whistle

i was talking to local ford tech.

We were talking about common issues with the 5.4 3v

He asked if i was hearing a whistle at a certain RPM, he said you would alter the throttle and it would go away.

He said they make a whistling noise when at a certain RPM, because of air flow going past the Throttle body Flapper (i forget name of top of head at the moment)

It goes, Phew, phewwwwww (lol) J/K

anyway, maybe that is all it is
