Whistle

I'm not sure if there's solice to be gained by not being the only person with a whistling Ford.

I'm going to call Ford, the Company, Monday and see if I can get to engineering and ask them. I've tried to make inquiries through the Ford website but that has proved fruitless.

Stay tuned.

To-day I spoke to a FoMoCo guy. Not and engineer but someone apparently in the know. Ford realizes there's a problem and they are working on it. They think it's in the PCV system they expect a TSB soon and a fix announcement, apparently. Spoke to a couple of Ford dealership mechanicas as well; they are aware from trucks coming in but their respective searches have failed to find the problem. Warm weather's coming that'll help !!

Do a search on "cold weather whistle" (if yours occurs just in colder weather) and you'll find quite a bit of information. You'll also probably stumble upon a detailed description of the symptoms I had with my 2005 5.4 liter. After nearly 2 years of getting run around, I replaced my alternator and discovered a bad bearing that was causing the whole thing.

There is a similar (but different) set of symptoms caused by a bad idler pulley, so search carefully for the problem you have. If your symptoms match mine, don't be afraid to PM or e-mail me for more information.

My truck is in the shop today for the exact noise you describe.
I had the complete 30K service done about 2 weeks ago. This is when it started.
Dealer tells me it is an intake noise. Claims they all do it. I told him it did not do it on mine until 2 weeks ago. The truck is under warranty, get it fixed.
Dealer is calling Ford to see if they have a fix.
I think mine is more of a squeal. It stops when the throttle is let off. It can come on anywhere from 10 mph to 60 mph. It does seem more pronounced when cold than hot.
I am going to stay on the dealer. For all I know, it is a bad seal on an air filter.
Let me know if anyone has a similar experience.

So is anyone a whizbang enough to figure this out.

Funny thing is I don't recall ever hearing this noise in the almost three years I've owned the truck.

It's so annoying.

Tom

My 04 5.4 67000 miles makes this exact noise, dealer told me it was not related to my cam phaser problem. He said something about having an arrestor or something like that installed on my exhaust system. I will have to ask again when I go pick up the truck from the dealership. Only cold weather and from about 60-72 mph. Very annoying

I used to get a whistle at highway speeds, but a lot of it depended on which way the wind was blowing as well. It's a commonly known fact (on this board anyway, although this topic hasn't come up lately) that a high pitch whistle is created as air passes between the grille and grille surround.
I believe some people place a piece of foam between them and this took care of the problem.
Ever since I've had a bug deflector installed I haven't heard that whistle.

BTW, I also get the cold air whistle at times, but that's entirely different and can be made to go away by adjusting throttle with your foot on the gas peddle to adjust rpm's. Eventually, nce the truck is well warmed up it generally goes away.

Hate to bring back up a semi sorta dead thread here guys, but I just noticed this same issue with my truck about 5K miles ago. I have 52K on the clock right now. Truck is an 05 5.4. I originally thought the whistle was related to driving speed, however it is not. It happens only when temps are below 30 degs. I can recreate the whistle in my driveway at 1800-1850rpm, 2050-2100 rpm and right about 3K rpm. It does the same on the highway as well, so that tells me it has nothing to do with having a load on the engine. Has anyone figured this out yet? I was going to start with the PCV system and go from there...

Wow this is funny. All this time i thought it was my intake, so i took it off put back the stock box and it was still there. so i then thought it was the wind blowing through my billot grill but changed that back to the stock grill, and still the same tune. So all i do now is crank the tunes and problem solved. LOL!! But all and all it is annoying.

I just bought my 2006 2 weeks ago and just started having this problem, 66k miles

The dealer didn't really offer any help until something 'fails'. Does anyone have any suggestions? (other than finding a new dealer)

I've had my 06 for about 1.5 months, noticed it on the way home the day I bought it. I only notice it a highway speeds, but it has been pretty cold here. Next warm day I'll see if it still does it. I hope we can figure it out.

I also have what I believe is the wind whistle at and above 70MPH but can't seem to find any other posts about the foam.

Can anybody tell me where exactly I need to put the foam or point me towards a thread that does? I don't see anything obvious around the grille when I look at it, and I don't want to be randomly sticking on foam.

The whistle is loud enough that it is driving me a bit nuts.

Thanks,

Phil
