Coil Pack question

I had the stutter last week that everyone talks about. Went to Advance auto and found it to be number 3. Replaced the COP and drove to work the next day. It ran fine for about 15 minutes then started up again. Check engine light came back on and it was number 3 again. Replace the plug which I didn't do the first time but have the same result. Drive 15 miles then it starts up again. No check engine light as of yet. What else can I check? It feels like the COP is on properly. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Howdy,

Did you use dielectric grease when installing the new COP boot on the plug?

That's incorrect or bias. Regardless, most people here use Global coils and now U Neek's. Both have the best track record as far as coils and their only $9 apiece. I have both Motorcraft sets and Global sets. I've had two fail in the Motorcraft sets - Globals have been in the truck for the last two years. I just changed those out for a new set of Globals, - the old set wasn't bad, I just wanted a new set in there. - No problems.

The coils (COP systems/not coil packs) you want to steer clear from are ACCELLS. They have the worst track record as far as statistics. You don't need to waste your money on Motorcrafts - Very overpriced! You can get a bad electrical component out of the box from anyone - even Motorcraft.

I didn't use the dielectric grease, probably should have, and will go back and do that. I used whatever brand coil pack Advance Auto sells. I don't even remember. I didn't notice grease on the one I took out. Thanks for your input and if you have anymore feel free!

5.4, 113000 miles, Motorcraft plug. And I believe it was a Niehoff now that I think about it.

Swap the fuel injectors on cylinders 2 and 3 and see if the problem moves to 2. Same thing with the COPs and plugs, if there's still any doubt at all about them.

Are you rebooting ? If so, you have more than one bad coil. You can try what Queso said, but wait for a CEL first. I doubt it's an injector, I haven't seen or heard of those going bad in that model. It's possible, - just very unlikely.

Should just replace all the coils at this point. Hell, their only $70 for a set (all 8).

Has the motor been wet in the recent past?

I replace the spark plug and coil pack. The service engine light went away but I still have a stumble around 45-55 mph especially after the vehicle warms up. I can't get it to code for anything. I haven't tried the dielectric grease as of yet but there wasn't any on the one I replaced. Any other ideas?
Thanks for all the input.

Wait a minute lol - You better get those coil packs off that thing. 5fours don't use them. That's your problem.

R U okay ? Porque ? What's that- dinner ? Yea, coil packs are part of the older 4six ignition systems. I think the 4twos still use one. 5fours use dedicated coils - 1 per cylinder. Coil packs use plug wires. COP systems do not.

Had a similar problem.

first it threw a code and one plug and a COP was replaced coil over plug.

couple months later i started to get a like hesitation at throttle. did not throw a code

replaced all plugs with motorcraft and all COPS with global and it purrs like a kitten.
