manuals and starting issues

I didn't really know where to post this at, but can anyone tell me what the difference is in a chilton's manual and a haynes manual for diy repairs? Where can I get a chilton's at? How much do they usually cost? I'd like a manual that tells where oxygen sensors are as well as other parts of the engine, and how to replace.

What I'm looking for is the answer to my starting problems on my 1993 f150 5.0L 302. The issue is that it is hard to start when the engine is hot or warm, and when the weather is hot. I briefly looked through a haynes manual at autozone the other day and the troubleshooting section showed this problem. One thing it said is that fuel may not be getting to the injectors, but I do not believe that to be the problem. The truck smells like it runs rich also, and has a lack of power, very sluggish. There was another thing written in the manual but I had to go. I didn't want to buy it w/o knowing whether it could be of any use to me.

sounds like your ect may be going bad. take it out and if you have an ohm meter then test it. put it in a glass of water at about 100*f and put the 2 meter leads on the 2 terminal pins. it should read right around 177 ohms.

is there a check engine light?

what is the ect? will doing what you're talking about heat it up to about the temp it should be for a 'hot start?'

there has never been a check engine light for this problem. i have always suspected that the problem is the oxygen sensors and/or any other sensors on it....it has 167,000 miles and i did change a couple of sensors the past 3 years just trying to see if it might fix it, but no luck. i figured they needed changing anyway. i can't remember which ones, but i have it written down.

anyway, that's why i'm interested in which manual is the best to get, because i'd like to replace those sensors no matter what- they gotta be bad or almost bad. and i wanted whichever manual would show me where they're all located and how many and what names.

Honestly. I think it is personal preference. I prefer the Haynes manuals. Excellent detail on repairs and they have good wiring diagrams.

the ect is the coolant temp sensor. it can cause the computer to keep dumping fuel down into the cylinders if it tells it that the engine coolant is cold, which will cause it to give you starting problems. usually when they go bad it'll say that the engine is running at -40*f. i told you to test the ect at 100*f because i didnt feel like typing in all the temps and the resistances at those temps, but that will normally tell you if its good or not.

your oxygen sensor should be in the same location as my 93 5.0. mine is right in front of the first cat convertor.

yeah i've heard both ways on the manuals before too, i can get the haynes at autozone for about $20 or order chilton's online for about $30+ shipping it looks like.

i'll have to check into that ect, especially when i get me a manual. either way, i'll probably end up replacing it because all the sensors probably need replacing at this point. i usually just buy the knock offs at advance auto or somewhere instead of buying ford's 200% markup products on stuff like that. i don't know if this will help in terms of the symptoms to describe it to you, but it always starts up, but whenever the engine is warm/hot it takes it about 3-4 good tries to start up. i really think you're right, it is a sensor somewhere, or maybe more than one that is bad.
