On mine, a 2000 5.4, it musta been the a/c comprerssor/clutch/pulley, one or a combination. My whistle would be a cold thing doing it between 1600-2100 rpm and in the summer, gone. After I changed alot of what might have needed etc, still nothing. Things like pcv hoses and valve, IAC, cleaned the t-body. On the new styles, I thaught it was a windshield sealing problem when going certain speeds but I guess not.

it definetly must be something with the cold, i put a K&N air filter in just to see if it would stop it a little bit but it didn't change anything really. You guys think a cold airintake would get rid of that air whistle

This one's been brought up before if you do a little searching here. I have it (big time) on my 2005 with the 5.4 3V motor. Happens only below 40 degrees (F) and it's worse when it's dry out. Right about 1,800 RPM's it will really get your attention and ever so slightly changing the pressure on the gas pedal will make it go away.

The dealer keeps telling me that "it's a known problem with no known cure." I've tried replacing the Serpentine Belt, air filters and cleaned & lubed the rubber seals on the intake side - all to no avail. A new Alternator is going in this week for other reasons. I'll try the Idler Pulley too since it's a relatively cheap part. Man I hope this works because this whistle will drive you nuts!
