I've never tried turning one without plugs, but I know with plugs in they don't turn very easy compared with other engines.

I think you'll find the general feeling to be the easiest and most reliable option is to find a good used engine and go that way. Modular motors are tuff and expensive to build right. They generally will last over 200k at least from the factory. If you find one that has under 100k You'll get a motor that has a long life ahead of it. I think the motor will only be one of many issues your going to face with a flood recovery vehicle. If it were me I would look for a donor truck.

for all you nay sayers and doubters, the truck is running (good)
2 bent and 1 broken connecting rod
lots of water drained from all fluids
and a 3 week plus PATS challenge, dude from my jobs fleet garage came by the house and programmed keys to new transceiver and cluster gauge (voila), she started, bit sluggish but after about an hour of 10 - 15 mins off on. smooth as silk.

thanks to everyone who offered a ray of hope.

floods are not as bad as people make them out to be, just makes you think a bit harder, i was pissed throughout my 3 month project but i saved thousands, now i'm just tying up the loose ends, the project continues as i have tweeking and cosmetics to work on. damn i love this game.
