4.9L rough idle

I was driving my pickup when it started to stall and backfire. It died when I came to a stop and could not get it to start after that. I checked the ingition system out thinking that it may have something to do with it. The distributor is new and only had some carosion on the points in the cap. My friend and I also discovered a ground wire in my ignition system that had a great deal of resistance. After replacing that wire and cleaning the points on distributor cap the truck started just fine but would not idle for crap. We adjusted the timing and the carb hoping that would help which it did not. I was curious if anyone could give me any ideas on what to check because we are at a lose. The truck is a F-150 4x4 with a 4 speed and a 300 6 cylinder.

mileage? is it only at idle? did you do a compression test? have you put a spark tester on each of the spark plugs? does it have the factory carb? what rpm is the engine idling at? may just be bad gas.

The truck has a stock carb on it. It happens at idle and when i try to rev it it starts making a light knocking noise and chokes a little. then it takes off but still idles really rough. Not sure what rpm it idles at, I have no tac yet.
