Best oil filter and why for my 1998 w/ 5.4

Hey guys,
What is the best oil filter for our trucks and can you explain your suggestions. Currently I use the NAPA Gold filter that WIX makes.
About 2000 + miles ago, I switched to the 5w-30 Royal Purple but would feel more comfortable switching the oil filter at 3000 miles.
Your help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Awesome info guys, thanks.

It looks like I will stay with my NAPA Gold. My local NAPA is owned by a friend and he said that the difference between the Silver and Gold series is a better filter element inside the filter. For what little it cost's between the two, he never recommends the Silver and he sells the Gold series 10 to 1 over the silver. Have either of you used the Mobil 1 filter, it looks like it has some good technology built into it.
Brew & Crash, what filters are you using ?

As long as you're not using a Fram, I don't think you can really go wrong with filters out today. Any top, name brand manufacturer is going to be of decent, dependable quality.

With that said, if cost is a factor for you then hands down, best bang for the buck is going to go to Motorcraft.

If cost is not your top concern and filter quality and life are, then M1 or Amsoil EaO is top billet.

Judging by what you said in your first post, you go longer than 3,000 miles on an oil change. With an Amsoil filter this would be completely unnecessary. The Amsoil filter is rated to handle 25,000 miles. Also on the M1 will go way past 3,000 miles, negating any price premium you pay for them.

My oil change intervals will be around 5k, 6k max. Believe it or not, that is all I put on my truck in a year. I do feel more comfortable changing the filter at least once in that time. Glad you mentioned the M1 filter. My next oil change, that will probably be the filter I choose. The reason I made the change to using Royal Purple was, I rent a house one week a yr in the Adirondeck's and I met a guy who is a Sales Manager with NAPA. We had a long talk about oils, and I brought up Royal Purple. He had all the right info and answers for me, so I made the conversion. I was pretty impressed with his knowledge of the product. RP's website is very informative as well. I wasn't looking for HP gains or any of that Hype, I wanted better protection for the bearings and moving engine parts.

The NAPA Gold is probably a very good choice.

Just as an FYI, my local O'Reilly's carries WIX filters (identical twins to the NAPA Gold's) for about a buck cheaper than the NAPA Gold's...don't know if you have an O'Reilly's nearby or not...if your buddy owns the NAPA store, maybe you want to keep shopping regardless of small price differences.

I personally think the Motorcraft FL820S is the best bargain out there as far as filters for our trucks...a very good filter usually available at a very good price at Wallyworld.

amsoil eao #11 with amsoil ow20 oil ,once a yr oil changes with analysis, 140 k trouble free miles,analysis reports these are definelty top notch filters and do what they claim.

If you are using synthetic oil and are going for extended drain intervals, use a M1 or an Amsoil. For dino or semi-synthetic and "normal" drain intervals, Motorcraft and Wix/Napa Gold are the best options.

Right now I have a NAPA gold because I was out of town when I changed last and it's a very good filter. Like the WIX - well close to it. Carquest filters are WIX..

I use the motorcraft when I can.. There's no-way in hell you could get me to go longer than 3k on an oil change.. Not after all the crap that I've seen get in these engines because of that so called longevity oil and filters .- It's all a marketing scam. I work in that buisness. 5OOO mile changes is pushing it IMO, but that's the SAFE MAX. Engine wear and damage isn't realiized until much later - starting with dry start noises. Those noises mean it's to late ..

So many non-believers here, I usually don't waste my time on the subject. I keep putting the miles behind me instead..

Motorcraft/Purolator - stick with that and you'll be okay.

IMO motorcraft is the only brand u shuld put on a ford. jus dont use fram ive had the inner cone on a fram filter collapse and almost suck through my engine lost oil pressure and everything fram sux

Oil filters have what is called a Beta Ratio. That's where glass ***** of known micron size are put into the fluid and run thru the filter. What comes out the other side is the efficiency of the filter. Your high flow filters will have a media that allowes the oil to flow thru faster but at the cost of filtration. A filter that slows the oil down too much would have the engine starve for oil. A Motorcraft or a Purolator will filter at 95% single pass meaning the fluid only goes thru the filter once. A high flow filter will probably be rated at 80% multi pass meaning the fluid has gone thru the filter many times and has only filtered 80% of the particulate. While a Beta ratio should be the badge of a good filter, it isn't. The test does not state at what pressure the fluid, the viscosity, the temperature, and other factors that can effect the test. So here's the best news, if you are driving a modern Triton engine, you probably will never run the filter at by-pass or clog one up. The Tritons are a very clean engine inside under normal conditions and don't develop the deposits and sludge if you are running an API rated oil that meets Fords 929 or 930 spec. The deposits and sludge are limited by the specs and the oil not only has to pass API testing but Ford testing as well. So buy a quality filter that you are comfy with, use the correct oil as recommended by Ford and enjoy the ride. Even a lowly Motorcraft does real good on my 7500 OCIs and I've never had any filter go into by-pass.

In regards to the filters that are cut open. The info is meanless. If you have 5 miles of media that is highly porous, what good is it? If you use a media that filters to 3 microns and don't use much of it, what good is it? The first will never filter the oil and the second will be in by-pass almost immediately. All filters are a compromise between filtration, flow, and capacity. A particule of 40 microns will do damage to your engine. A micron is 1/1,000,000 of a meter.

None of what labnerd said is bull ****- it is all factual and sound from an engineering standpoint.
Labnerd's comments are always fact base and sound. Unlike a lot of comments on this forum that are opinions stated as facts.

ive been using motorcraft filters, next oil change im going to go pick up a WIX filter, they sell them around the corner from me and see how i like it. thosel inks above say its a good filter so i will see. is it ok to switch to synthetic blend at 106,000 miles?
