Engine oil cooler needed?

Hello! I'm new to the forum and a new owner of a 01 F-150 7700. I've been looking around here for a while, gathering some info in preparation of buying a new travel trailer.

I got the build sheet for my truck today and all looked good except my truck seems to be built minus an engine oil cooler.

I was just wondering if you guys would recomend putting one on (have a spare kicking around the shop). I will be towing 6500lbs of TT next year. It already has a trans cooler and HD rad, etc. so no problem there.

Thanks for your comments and I'll see you around the board...

What you think is the trans cooler in front of the radiator is actually the oil cooler. The standard trans cooler is inside the side tank of the radiator. That is how my 01 is anyway.

I thought that on the 97-03's the two coolers in front of the rad were the trans cooler and the power steering cooler. There is no engine oil cooler. Someone correct me if I a wrong.

As for the trans cooler they are too small on our model years and should be upgraded if you do any towing.

Right and wrong. Two separate coolers for the Trans/PS. The engine oil cooler lines themselves is plumed into the radiator and run along the block. The Cooler is above the oil filter adapter unless you have a remote system.

This might help explain what Norm is saying -

But that's my set up , I had to order with the truck from Ford - Tow package + 4R100/ + 5 coolers = 2 larger size radiators (sort of) and two smaller. Oil makes 5.

In the diagram above, there's another big radiator in front of the main, can't see it here.

You learn something new every day.

I am almost due for my next oil change so I will have a look for the oil cooler. I don't think my oil filter is a remote system because it is directly over the front diff and is the sh*ts to get to, at least I would hope that if Ford put a remote system on it they would make it easy to access.

Mine is. Right underneath the front bumper

In '01 there was an A and B sub-package to the 7700 option. 'A' gave you a 14 plate trans cooler and 'B' gave you a 22 plate cooler. I have the 7700 'A' model.

So does everyone agree that I should just upgrade the stock trans cooler and forget about installing an engine oil cooler?

Or could I swap the trans cooler for a bigger one (which I have just lying around) and then use the stock trans cooler as an engine oil cooler?

BTW, thanks for the great responses. Very informative.

Norm,

The 7700 or tow package in '01 upgrades from an in rad cooler to an auxilary external cooler.

Thanks for the correction. It makes sense to upgrade the cooling on the 7700 series.

I would upgrade your trans cooler. A trans temp gauge would be a nice plus as well.

I would not bother changing the oil cooler. I did not know I even had one. I tow a 4500 pound TT in the summer and have no issues.

I do not have an engine oil cooler from factory, so would it be good to add one if I'm pulling 6500lbs?

From what I understand, all 5.4 equipped trucks get the 'integrated engine oil cooler'. You can tell if you have it by looking at your lower rad hose and if it tees off the main hose to two smaller hoses that attach to the block someplace then you have the engine oil cooler...

As far as needing a bigger aux trans cooler? Well, that depends on what your trans temps are now really... I have the stock aux trans cooler on my '97 and it does just fine for my rig... Basically keeps the trans temp @ 180* when it's working hard..

Other's found that they have needed a bigger one... All depends on your individual situation I guess... Only thing for sure is, if you don't already have an aux trans cooler, then you DO need one...

From what jbrew added in the 5th post, you do, we all do. I have not crawled under to check mine yet but I am inclined to believe him. He know his sh*t when it comes to these trucks. When you get a chance have a look.

As I understand it they come off your oil filter adapter and run to the rad. I am guessing the right hand side as the trans goes to the left and then out and to the aux cooler in front of the rad (if you were sitting in the drives seat).

If you have the remote system (unlike mine, where the oil filter is above the front diff) You may not have lines running to the rad as the remote system would act like an oil cooler since it ends up right underneath the front bumper (as Camarothatcould added).

At least that would be my take on it. Can anyone confirm?
