Cam Phasers?!

So I just got my truck back from my mechanic because I had this diesel sounding engine issue. My mechanic told me the job was to big for him to do and told me Im looking at 4-5g's to fix at a ford dealership. He also told me alot of people are having this issue, and a class action lawsuit is close to being filed against Ford. Told me I should call them up and try to do anything in my power to get them to pay for the issue. Does anyone have any advice? I knew I should of bought a Ram hehe :P Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

I dont have 4-5 grand to fix the issue ):

Is your mechanic sure its the cam phasers?

The cam phaser issue is just an annoyance. It does no harm to your truck unless something is really bad.

Just to clarify, what year and engine? As I recall, the cam phaser was about $1200 at the dealer.

04 5.4 with 70k miles on it. Ill be picking up the truck tomorrow and Ill get the entire story from him. He also quickly said the engine was not getting oil properly and if I do not let the truck idle long enough on cold starts/drive it to fast I can blow a rod and or seize the engine. I only got to talk to him for about a minute or so, but Ill have the full story tomorrow.

Use the Search tab, go to "advanced search" and enter "cam phaser replaced" and see what threads you get to read.

So the issue is about 4 almost 5 years old now and they are just now getting close to a class action suit? I call BS. If it were really that bad, it would have happened. And the noise is just (as stated earlier) a annoyance unless your truck is fubared.

I, too just got my truck back from the dealership. I needed a new cylinder head in order to fix the "engine tick." The service manager showed me the old head. The cam rod retainer bolt had broken, causing the lifter to shift, which somehow dislodged the valve retainer. It was clearly visible on the cam rod where there was a groove worn in it from the lifter rubbing it badly. He told me that the only thing keeping the valve from falling down into the cylinder was the sideways pressure from the lifter pressing against the valvespring. If it had gotten any worse, I would have needed a whole new motor. Anyway, as the OP stated, I have an '04 with 70K,and the tick was present since I bought the truck used with 24K. I am nearing the end of my ESP, so I wanted to get the tick fixed before the warranty ran out. Done! I even got new spark plugs (covered under warranty) and I was having a problem with my brakes, apparently I needed a new master cylinder, which will also be put in with the warranty claim. Needless to say, I am STOKED about the way the service manager handled this. The spark plugs and master cylinder are not covered by an ESP, but he hooked me up! I did have to wait 2 1/2 weeks for the head to come in, but he also got me a rental car to drive at no charge! Wow, what a guy! This is at the Lincoln dealership in my town. I would not even let the local Ford dealership check the air in my tires, talk about dumb a$$es. Anyway, my truck now runs nice and quiet, and has more power than I can ever remember since I bought it.
Sorry for the novel...........Anybody in Northwest Florida, It would be worth it to take any service or warranty issues to Beal Parkway Lincoln/Mercury in Fort Walton. I figure it saved me over $3000

Sorry, but about the oil issue, the service manager said that the passenger side head is the last to get oil when the motor is cranked (the head they replaced was the passenger side) He advised me to be sure to get a quality oil filter with a backflow valve. I have had my oil changed at the salme place for a while, with Motorcraft oil, but I was not requesting a "premium" filter. So from now on, I will request a premium filter, or what the heck, I will change my own oil so I know what I am getting.

Cam Phaser problem or not?

So I recently took my truck to the Ford dealer and they have diagnosed as both cam phasers are most likely bad and wouldn't know until they took it apart. After looking up info online about the phasers, i'm starting to wonder if that's my even my problem. My truck makes all the noises everyones talking about but my truck is misfiring like crazy! When I'm stopped, it shakes the whole truck and feels like it's gonna die. Then when I go, it just starts "putting" and I can't go very fast. Any IDEA? Thanks

Same problem!

I have the same issue. Let me know what you come up with. Motor stalls out at idle. Real rough when driving.

Had the same issue before. Truck started sputtering and would not get above 50mph. It turned out to be a bad coil pack. Did your truck throw a code?
