replace oil pan in 97

I'm being told that it takes removal of the engine in order to replace an oil pan. Estimated at 10 hours labor + $150 cost for pan. V-6 egine.
Is this factual ? Thanks for your help.

Drop the axle, it's easier.

You may need to unbolt the engine mounts as well, jack it up, and rest the engine on 2x4 lumber. You don't need to pull the engine if you do this, and drop the axle as Jbrew suggested. If a shop tells you otherwise, they are lying to charge you more for labor, or are just plain ignorant.

Yea but can you lift the motor enough without unbolting the trans ? Which is the bigger job of the two - Axle or motor? You might be able to lift the motor, just be careful , your fuel lines and harness are up there above the trans - If it's still bolted up.

You just need to lift or drop enough to clear the pickup tube and screen. About 4-6 inches and you can get it out of there.
